I have always loved being outside and in the sun! I do not know exactly why, but I do! Hot weather? No prob! "The hotter the better" is always my mind-set! Now getting a sun tan isn't just about "ME" though. When I am suntanning, I usually do my quiet time, work on articles, read through and do my school work and copywork. I love that time to just have time to meditate on God's Word and pray (talk) to Him! Something about that time takes my focus off of the busyness, the pressures, and everything else that life can bring my way...and turns my complete focus upon Jesus.
I have been reading a book called '"Wait for Me'" by one of my favorite singer/writers, Rebecca St. James. She also expresses this in her book...
"On days off, from time to time, I visit a bed-and-breakfast. It is a wonderful time to be still, play, rest, sometimes fast, and just be...with God. I have had some amazingly memorable times when I'm there. One trip in particular stands out in my mind. I was sitting on the front porch of the house, watching the sunset. It was that time of day when you can face the sun without being blinded by its usual brightness. I had been gazing intently at the sky in the direction of the sun when a bird caught my attention in a nearby tree. I shifted my eyes to look at it, and all of the sudden, my vision blacked out for a moment. I had to blink my eyes a few times to restore vision enough to see the bird. I realized that my eyes had so adjusted to the brightness of the western sky that the things around me had faded into the background and could not be seen as long as my eyes stayed focused toward the sun. I felt God speak to my spirit with a spiritual parallel to this picture. WHEN WE FOCUS OUR EYES ON THE SON, JESUS, THEN THE THINGS OF THIS WORLD, ITS TEMPTATIONS, FEARS, AND HURTS PALE IN SIGNIFICANCE. THEY FADE INTO THE BACKGROUND."
"Excerpted from 'Wait for Me' by Rebecca St. James"What if we were to get an intense focus on the Son of God? WHAT IF WE WERE TO LET ALL OF THE DISTRACTIONS FADE AWAY? What if we let go of trying to be the "godliest"... the "prettiest"... the "homeliest" person around? What if we stopped the competition between each other to just focus on God? What if we could look past the pain of our mistakes and focus on Jesus instead?
I have seen way too many people be way too uptight, as we all can be from time-to-time! We have such a tendency to get so caught up in the contest of life that "we forget to look at Jesus", the only One with all the answers to everything--diets, true beauty, healing, love, happiness, EVERYTHING!
So, just for today. WHY NOT JOIN ME TO BASK IN THE SON? Why not take a little time just to look at how Jesus spent His time? Why not slow down and just talk your heart out to Him--and let HIM talk to you? Why not take just bit of your day to look up at the Son and marvel at His beauty and light? Why not soak up His power? Oh, why not GO OUT TODAY AND GET YOURSELF AN AWESOME SUNTAN...or SON-TAN! Or...just do both!

My life and Peter's have revolved around my parents for a long time. Mother passed away three years ago--and now Dad has been placed at home in hospice care. It is a fascinating and intimate experience that Peter and I have dedicated ourselves to--learned from--and changed our lives to meet the various challenges.Dad has had numerous hospitalizations in the past year--and basically, they are mostly due to extreme old age and the implications of a strong spirit that has likely outlived his nearly 97 years.
Although he doesn't suffer mentally like Mother did, he has finally been diagnosed with a mild form of dementia. He, as our grandson Briston has said, "is still Gramps in the center". His loving and outgoing personality is still there. He loves being hugged and kissed, loves travel videos and even took a ride with Peter yesterday in our new car--a Toyota Prius he delightedly calls the "gas miser."For those of you who don't know, hospice means that doctors think a person has six months or less to live.
While Dad has pulled out of every nose dive thus far (and some have been terrible and breathtaking) his time is finally coming. For the first time during this last hospitalization, he said "I'm dying." At his age, most people would say, "of course." We think, "naturally." But his spirit--the stuff that makes him Glen--is so unfathomably young that it's hard to believe. We have been lucky to keep Dad here in our little village--where natural beauty and a slow pace make life much more enjoyable for all of us. He has had wonderful care from Fijian caregivers who have wonderful and gentle senses of humor. Now, there are hospice workers and volunteers and a terrific traveling doctor who drives out here to care for him. We know he has the best of all possible worlds.
Some of you have already been through these experiences with your parents; some are like us, experiencing our parents well into old age and beyond. It is an intense experience--fraught with uncertainty (are we doing the "right" thing--are we doing the right thing for wrong reasons--are we doing the wrong thing for right reasons, etc.) with a kind of richness that is difficult (even for a poet with enormous adverbial tendencies) to express properly. A dear friend gave me two wonderful books this holiday that have really enriched my spiritual understanding of this part of life: "The Year of Magical Thinking" by Joan Didion and "Gilead" by Marilynne Johnson. Both are remarkable books with fine writing. Although very different from this experience, there is a core of insight that has been a balm to me. I recommend them both.
We realize that we have been preoccuppied and distracted during these times. The focus we have given to this experience has sometimes made other family members or friends feel shortchanged. And we have ignored things that we both need in life--creative space, travel, professional development, personal endeavor and material goods that we have foregone. Still, I'm so happy we've been able to do this. As humans, we travel through life looking for the real thing--and often return to the place we started to "find it." On this journey, I've learned so much about forgiveness, compassion and happiness in the midst of great sadness and confusion. I can only say from my own experience that life is richer having made the effort.
Dad is quiet and resting. Some days are better than others. He adores his great grandchildren and is proud of his grandchildren--and keeps track of everyone from Incline Village to Dallas to London. He has a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction in life. It's a good feeling, in fact, contagious. Some days, (like our old cat Biscottini) he just likes sitting in the sun. All these things are happiness at its simplest and most complex.
As someone said to me the other day, "Life isn't a grand tour of France with a happy ending, it's a dusty caravan that continues on through storms and high winds--hopefully with love, friendship and laughter."

Here we are at the next stop on the DC40 Prayer siege. Today I'm prepping up to send light and love to the great state of Oklahoma. Many have asked what can I do to help defend my state from this attack. Well, if you'd like to get involved there are several ways to begin. You can participate in this wonderful blog support project that we've created called "What Makes Your State Great". We have created this group on Facebook and spend each day sending trivia thoughts, songs, posts, personal messages and comments on each of the states as they are listed in the prayer guide on DC40.net. Vinita is the oldest incorporated town on Oklahoma Route 66 being established in 1871. Vinita was the first town in Oklahoma to enjoy electricity. Originally named Downingville. The towns name was later changed to Vinita, in honor of Vinnie Ream, the sculptress who created the life-size statue of Lincoln at the United States Capitol.
Anadarko is home to the only authentic Indian City in the United States. It is located in the beautiful Washita river valley in southwest Oklahoma. Born in 1879 on a large ranch in the Cherokee Nation near what later would become Oologah, Oklahoma, Will Rogers was first an Indian, a cowboy then a national figure. Will Rogers was a star of Broadway and 71 movies of the 1920s and 1930s, a popular broadcaster and wrote more than 4,000 syndicated newspaper columns.
Choctaw is the oldest chartered town in Oklahoma. Choctaw gained status as a town in 1893. Originally Indian Territory, the state of Oklahoma was opened to settlers in a "Land Rush" in 1889. On a given date, prospective settlers would be allowed into the territory to claim plots of land by grabbing the stakes marking each plot. A few of these settlers entered to claim land before the official start of the land run; these cheaters were called "Sooners".
Tahlequah, Oklahoma is the Tribal capital of the Cherokee Nation. Spiro Mounds, Oklahoma's only archaeological park, is a 140-acre site encompassing 12 southern mounds that contain evidence of an Indian culture that occupied the site from 850 A.D. to 1450 A.D. The Mounds are considered one of the four most important prehistoric Indian sites east of the Rocky Mountains.
Oklahoma's state wildflower the Indian Blanket is red with yellow tips. It symbolizes the state's scenic beauty as well as the its Indian heritage. The wildflower blooms in June and July. Sequoyah's Cabin in Akins is a frontier house of logs, occupied (1829-44) by Sequoyah (George Gist), the teacher who in 1821 invented a syllabary that made it possible to read and write the Cherokee language.
Oklahoma has the largest Native American population of any state in the U.S. Many of the 250,000 American Indians living in Oklahoma are descended from the 67 tribes who inhabited the Indian Territory. Oklahoma is tribal headquarters for 39 tribes. Oklahoma is the traditional homeland of the Caddo, Wichita, and Tonkawa people.
Looking at our nation, only on the 5th day of this prayer siege, it's hard for me to believe that anyone cannot see that our nation was not founded upon "Christian Ideals". In fact it was stolen by them. The native people of America were indeed Pagan people. I've found the following video to share with you.

One of my favorite things to do is blending incense from fresh herbs,resins, and essential oils. It is such a magickal and spiritual act for me, and I decided to open an Etsy shop devoted to just that - handblended ritual incense and oils created with intent and only using certified organic ingredients. Most of my blends are created during corresponding lunar phases, depending on the purpose of the blend. Any blend for a specific deity is done in ritual, especially if it is a blend for Hekate. Every ingredient I use is carefully selected due to it's magickal and/or healing qualities and planetary correspondences, again depending on the purpose of the blend. I don't always select ingredients that "smell pretty"; ritual incense, in my opinion, is used to lend power to your rites and using appropriate ingredients is very important to me. All work is done in a section of my kitchen reserved just for this ~ the kitchen truly is the heart of the home, and it such a magickal place in my own home because of the time spent in there not only cooking, but working magick. We tend to move every few years due to my husband's job, and the kitchen is always the first room in the new house that is purified and blessed (and, of course, Hekate takes Her place at the threshold, as well!). 2. In the U.S., March is national Women's History Month, and Sunday was International Women's Day. Around the world, individuals and organizations celebrated the role and influence of women in society. Pagans and Heathens were among them. There is much to celebrate. In many places, women have come a "long way baby" from the Victorian days of limited opportunity and arranged marriages.
However, this is not the case everywhere. Limited opportunities and crimes against women persist throughout the world, manifesting in many different ways. Last March, former U.S. president Jimmy Carter was quoted as saying in an interview with NBC, violence against women is "the worst and most pervasive and unaddressed human rights violation on Earth."
[public domain]According to a recent "New York Times" article,"35 percent of women worldwide, more than one in three, have experienced physical violence in their lifetime." In that same article, it is reported that "38 percent of women who are murdered are killed by their partners."
This past Monday and Tuesday, the U.N. convened the "Commission on the Status of Women and Girls. "During the two-day session a number of prominent international women spoke about conditions in their countries. Generally, the speakers agreed that the problem is very serious and highly complex. As such, there is not one single solution that will fit every country and every culture.
In the U.N.'s official report, Phumzile Mlabmbo-Ncguka, undersecretary-general for "Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women" and executive director of "U.N."-"Women" was described as saying:
"We need urgent action and much stronger political commitment." Human rights were interdependent and indivisible, Mlabmbo-Ncguka said, adding that men must be partners politically and in the home, including as parents. Men and boys were key to dismantling the patriarchy. That meant, among others, saying "no" to early marriages. The bold, brave acts of one Head of State or one student leader could have far-reaching effects. "We must make the economy work for women," she stressed, adding, "empowering women empowers nations"
Unfortunately, some of the most horrific, violent crimes committed against the world's women are connected to witchcraft. It is often said that the historical European and American witch-hunts were simply organized attacks on women. In contemporary society, this seems to be, at least partly, true. Whether the reasons or motivations are the same would be a project for sociologists and historians. However, it is enough to know that the current witch-hunts and related tragedies are very real, and women are most commonly the victims.
In June 2014, the U.N. released a report opening with the question, "Did you know violence and abuse against elderly women, the world's fastest growing demographic group, range from sexual violence, property grabbing, financial abuse and increasingly, extreme violence against older women accused of witchcraft?" It continues on to say, "Witchcraft accusations that are used to justify extreme violence against older women are reported in 41 African and Asian countries"
But none of that is news. Women, specifically older women, have been the primary victims of witchcraft violence for years. However, what is news, is the growing and very recent pressure worldwide to fix the problem.
In Monday's U.N. Session, Nana Oye Lithur, minister for "Gender, Children and Social Protection of Ghana", reported on the positive momentum and strides being made in her own country in an effort to bring about gender quality.The report describes her as saying specifically, "The [Ghana] Ministry had recently closed down one of the country's 'witch camps,' which had held captive a number of women accused of being witches." The December 2014 closing was marked as an historical event in the fight for women's rights.

(c)Stephan Bachenheimer/World Bank SB-NP01]There are efforts being made by local governments and international advocacy organizations to end this tragic cycle, one that is based on a fear, cultural stigmas and gender-bias. Last year, we reported on one of the most recent legislative attempts to curb the witch-related violence. Like others before it, Nepal made illegal all witchcraft accusations and related violence. The South African Pagan Alliance (SAPRA), Witchcraft & Human Rights Information Network (WHRIN) and other similar advocacy organizations work with International Human Rights groups, the U.N. and local governments to continue pushing for this level of awareness and legal intervention.
Unfortunately, laws don't necessarily bring an end to the violence. A 57-year-old woman, believed to be a witch, was just found "thrashed" in a village in Nepal. A recent article out of India suggests one of the reasons for continued hunts is a lack of law enforcement education. The article says:
"Murders and other serious crimes in the name of witchcraft, sorcery and superstitious practices continue unabated in the State despite more than a year of enactment of Odisha Prevention of Witch Hunting Act, 2013, thanks to utter ignorance of its provisions among law enforcers on the ground. "
The article adds that India is now working to educate its local police force.
In Africa, Tanzania's government has recently taken a different approach. This January, it outlawed the actual practice of witchcraft. Over the past several years,Tanzania has seen a marked increased in the number of albino killings caused by so-called "witch doctors," who propagate fear and superstition. Many locals believe that the limbs of a person with albinism have magical powers. According to a Red Cross report, these "witch doctors" will pay upward of "75,000 for a complete set of albino limbs." While this horrific violence is not at all limited to women, it is yet another abuse in a long list. Last year, the Huffington Post featured stories from a number of Tanzania's albino women and their struggle to survive.
But murder and dismemberment are not the only problems caused by the propagation of witchcraft superstitions. According to a recent BBC report, the U.K. is facing a similar issue with the African Sex Trade industry. The article reads "British courts have found difficulty in bringing African sex-traffickers to justice because a belief in black magic and juju "spells" makes victims afraid to testify." The women, taken primarily from Nigeria, are made to believe that these "witch doctors" hold powers of them and, as a result, are terrified to fight back or speak out.
The problem here is twofold. There are women, mostly elderly, who are being accused of witchcraft and, consequently, face abuse, confinement and death. Then, there are others, again mostly women, who are being manipulated through fear of witchcraft, into prostitution, a life of solitude, abuse, dismemberment and death. In some cases, the governments have banned witch-hunting and, in others, witchcraft itself.
Unfortunately, the latter legislation causes problems for legitimate Pagans, folk practitioners, or others using magic for purely spiritual purposes, such as WITZAN in Nigeria. Members of SAPRA have been working to reform these laws within their own country of South Africa, while also raising awareness for the problem. March 29 marks the beginning of SAPRA's annual event called "30 Days of Advocacy Against Witch Hunts."
The problem rages on with no end in sight, and not just in the countries mentioned above. Equally as troublesome is that "witchcraft," even if it's just in name, is being used as a method to promote gender inequality and to justify the abuse of women and girls.
At this week's 59th session of the "Commission on the Status of Women and Girls", Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon was described as saying:
"Women continued to suffer disproportionately from the economic crisis, from the impacts of climate change, from the displacement caused by conflict, persecution and other challenges. Extremist groups continued to 'viciously and systematically attack girls and women"
This work includes the detangling of cultural fears and gender-biases, from superstitions, from would-be "witchcraft," and from the spiritual practice of magic and Witchcraft.
General Ban Ki-moon then called on the Commission to speed up its efforts, to find workable solutions for these problems and to finally bring about true gender equality and create a world safe for women - "all women". He added, "The world will never realize 100 per cent of its goals if 50 per cent of its people cannot realize their full potential."Send to Kindle
Members of Burma's Buddhist majority, including some of its much-respected monks, are increasingly persecuting the country's long-suffering Muslim minority and adopting an ideology that encourages religious violence. It seems a far way from the Buddhism typically associated with stoic monks and the Lama - who has condemned the violence - and more akin to the sectarian extremism prevalent in troubled corners of the Middle East. The violence has already left nearly 250 Burmese Muslim civilians dead, forced 150,000 from their homes and is getting worse.
"You can be full of kindness and love, but you cannot sleep next to a mad dog," Ashin Wirathu, a spiritual leader of the movement and very popular figure in Burma, said of the country's Muslims, whom he called "the enemy." He told the New York Times, "I am proud to be called a radical Buddhist."
Wirathu calls himself "the Burmese bin Laden" and was recently labeled on the cover of Time magazine as "the face of Burmese terror." A prominent Burmese human rights activist, after a lifetime of fighting government oppression, now warns that Wirathu's movement is promoting an ideology akin to neo-Nazism.
Already, the movement has expanded beyond this one self-styled radical Buddhist monk. It's now expanding across Burma (also known as Myanmar) according to the Times article. The anti-Muslim sentiment has spread with alarming speed over just the last year, as Burma - which is finally opening up after years of military dictatorship - loosened its strict speech laws. It has prompted boycotts and sermons that can sound an awful lot like calls for violence against Muslims. Monasteries associated with the movement have enrolled 60,000 Burmese children into Sunday school programs. FULL STORY...

According to the Huffington Post, the FBI Advisory Policy Board yesterday approved a pending proposal to amend the standard hare crime incident reporting form so that police departments around the country track hate crimes against Sikhs, Hindus and Arabs. Subsequently yesterday an FBI spokesman announced that the FBI will go even further and will track hate crimes against "all self-identified religions in the United States as listed in the Pew Research Center's Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life (2008) and the Statistical Abstract (2012) approved by the U.S. Census Bureau." That list includes: Catholic, Protestant, Mormon, Jehovah's Witness, Orthodox, Other Christian, Jewish, Islamic (Muslim), Buddhist, Hindu, Sikh, Other Religions, Multiple Religions-Group, and Atheism/Agnosticism. All of these changes must still be approved by FBI Director Robert Mueller.
