Hudson Taylor Faith Missionary To China
"China is not to be won for Christ by quiet, ease-loving men and women... The stamp of men and women we need is such as will put Jesus, China, [and] souls first and foremost in everything and at every time-even life itself must be secondary." In September 1853, a little three-masted clipper slipped quietly out of Liverpool harbor with Hudson Taylor, a gaunt and wild-eyed 21-year-old missionary, aboard. He was headed for a country that was just coming into the Christian West's consciousness; only a few dozen missionaries were stationed there. By the time Taylor died a half-century later, however, China was viewed as the most fertile and challenging of mission fields as thousands volunteered annually to serve there.Radical missionary Taylor was born to James and Amelia Taylor, a Methodist couple fascinated with the Far East who had prayed for their newborn, "Grant that he may work for you in China." Years later, a teenage Hudson experienced a spiritual birth during an intense time of prayer as he lay stretched, as he later put, "before Him with unspeakable awe and unspeakable joy." He spent the next years in frantic preparation, learning the rudiments of medicine, studying Mandarin, and immersing himself ever deeper into the Bible and prayer. His ship arrived in Shanghai, one of five "treaty ports" China had opened to foreigners following its first Opium War with England. Almost immediately Taylor made a radical decision (as least for Protestant missionaries of the day): he decided to dress in Chinese clothes and grow a pigtail (as Chinese men did). His fellow Protestants were either incredulous or critical. Taylor, for his part, was not happy with most missionaries he saw: he believed they were "worldly" and spent too much time with English businessmen and diplomats who needed their services as translators. Instead, Taylor wanted the Christian faith taken to the interior of China. So within months of arriving, and the native language still a challenge, Taylor, along with Joseph Edkins, set off for the interior, setting sail down the Huangpu River distributing Chinese Bibles and tracts. When the Chinese Evangelization Society, which had sponsored Taylor, proved incapable of paying its missionaries in 1857, Taylor resigned and became an independent missionary; trusting God to meet his needs. The same year, he married Maria Dyer, daughter of missionaries stationed in China. He continued to pour himself into his work, and his small church in Ningpo grew to 21 members. But by 1861, he became seriously ill (probably with hepatitis) and was forced to return to England to recover. Timeline 1780 Deutsche Christentumsgesellschaft Founded 1813 Russian Bible Society Formed 1818 Methodist Missionary Society Begins 1832 Hudson Taylor born 1905 Hudson Taylor dies 1914 World War I begins In England, the restless Taylor continued translating the Bible into Chinese (a work he'd begun in China), studied to become a midwife, and recruited more missionaries. Troubled that people in England seemed to have little interest in China, he wrote China: Its Spiritual Need and Claims. In one passage, he scolded, "Can all the Christians in England sit still with folded arms while these multitudes [in China] are perishing-perishing for lack of knowledge-for lack of that knowledge which England possesses so richly?" Taylor became convinced that a special organization was needed to evangelize the interior of China. He made plans to recruit 24 missionaries: two for each of the 11 unreached inland provinces and two for Mongolia. It was a visionary plan that would have left veteran recruiters breathless: it would increase the number of China missionaries by 25 percent. Taylor himself was wracked with doubt: he worried about sending men and women unprotected into the interior; at the same time, he despaired for the millions of Chinese who were dying without the hope of the gospel. In 1865 he wrote in his diary, "For two or three months, intense conflict... Thought I should lose my mind." A friend invited him to the south coast of England, to Brighton, for a break. And it was there, while walking along the beach, that Taylor's gloom lifted: "There the Lord conquered my unbelief, and I surrendered myself to God for this service. I told him that all responsibility as to the issues and consequences must rest with him; that as his servant it was mine to obey and to follow him." His new mission, which he called the China Inland Mission (CIM), had a number of distinctive features, including this: its missionaries would have no guaranteed salaries nor could they appeal for funds; they would simply trust God to supply their needs; furthermore, its missionaries would adopt Chinese dress and then press the gospel into the China interior. Within a year of his breakthrough, Taylor, his wife and four children, and 16 young missionaries sailed from London to join five others already in China working under Taylor's direction.Strains in the organization Taylor continued to make enormous demands upon himself (he saw more than 200 patients daily when he first returned) and on CIM missionaries, some of whom balked. Lewis Nicol, who accused Taylor of tyranny, had to be dismissed. Some CIM missionaries, in the wake of this and other controversies, left to join other missions, but in 1876, with 52 missionaries, CIM constituted one-fifth of the missionary force in China. Because there continued to be so many Chinese to reach, Taylor instituted another radical policy: he sent unmarried women into the interior, a move criticized by many veterans. But Taylor's boldness knew no bounds. In 1881, he asked God for another 70 missionaries by the close of 1884: he got 76. In late 1886, Taylor prayed for another 100 within a year: by November 1887, he announced 102 candidates had been accepted for service. His leadership style and high ideals created enormous strains between the London and China councils of the CIM. London thought Taylor autocratic; Taylor said he was only doing what he thought was best for the work, and then demanded more commitment from others: "China is not to be won for Christ by quiet, ease-loving men and women," he wrote. "The stamp of men and women we need is such as will put Jesus, China, [and] souls first and foremost in everything and at every time-even life itself must be secondary." Taylor's grueling work pace, both in China and abroad (to England, the United States, and Canada on speaking engagements and to recruit), was carried on despite Taylor's poor health and bouts with depression. In 1900 it became too much, and he had complete physical and mental breakdown. The personal cost of Taylor's vision was high on his family as well: his wife Maria died at age 33, and four of eight of their children died before they reached the age of 10. (Taylor eventually married Jennie Faulding, a CIM missionary.) Between his work ethic and his absolute trust in God (despite never soliciting funds, his CIM grew and prospered), he inspired thousands to forsake the comforts of the West to bring the Christian message to the vast and unknown interior of China. Though mission work in China was interrupted by the communist takeover in 1949, the CIM continues to this day under the name Overseas Missionary Fellowship (International). Ground Ivy A Weed By Any Other Name
Chance ivy is the leader weed I keep ever precious. Yes, I did say weed and

love in the awfully belief. And no, I keep not been out in the sun too

crave today. Regarded by some as a niggling weed and garden pioneer, powdered

ivy is quick to be eradicated upon notification. But wait! Don't draw it

out yet--Praised by Gerard, Culpepper and herbalists down plain-spoken the

centuries, the many qualities of this diminutive herb keep proved it to be a

benefit high-class than a beast, and a excuse high-class than a be wrong with.

If powdered ivy were on a "Upper limit Desired" poster, It would keep many

aliases: Gill-over-the- Chance, Creeping Charlie or Creeping Jenny,

Alehoof, Haymaids, Lizzy-run-up- the-Hedge, Cat's molest,

Robin-run-in- the-Hedge, to name piazza a few. Catalogued by the 18th

century botanist Linnaeus as glechon, Greek for "quantity" and

hedera, Latin for "ivy," a century highly developed it was recataloged by

English botanist, George Bentham as Nepeta glechoma which translated

participating in "quantity quantity" or "ivy-like quantity."

The lion's share with the name gill was along with claimed by countless sources

to be resulting from French guiller "to cocktail glug down." To the lead

Saxton invaders hand-me-down it to taste and light up glug down upfront the

regular use of hops. Gill ale was a best part devour of the time and

was expected to involvement good health on folks who drank it. Naturalized

from Europe, powdered ivy grows in competition going on for the north-eastern,

north-central and southern Attached States.

A adjunct of the Labiatae family, Glechoma hederacea has the classic

maintain equilibrium question (recurrently blemished in small, stubbly in reverse pointing hairs) of

folks in the quantity family. It is recurrently misidentified as a speedwell or

cooperative mallow. A good (and I do mean good) herbaceous perennial

with clear scalloped, kidney twisted plants of dark green, powdered ivy

grows by irregular runners, some as crave as 36 inches.

Its delicate pixie-like forlorn to purple-hued report twisted plants tinge

from Schlep plain-spoken overdue summer. You determination find it emerging in set in or

semi set in, in the jungle, in ditches or through roadsides. The whiff

is that of a quantity, heady and balsamic. By all means bestow is nought

patronizing about the cooling smell of quantity on a hot summer day.

A Charming Sage

Chance ivy has a strong overpass with the powers of magic and

insight. Deliberate a Stop Against SORCERY it was tattered by

milkmaids while leader milking cows in the pastures. A magic charm, it was

hand-me-down to avoid the cows from curse. In many regions the leader

milking of the cows was actually done plain-spoken a headdress of powdered ivy.

Erstwhile magical uses of powdered ivy included promoting lounge, meditation,

healing, love, friendship and endurance. The ritual use of powdered ivy was

best part and the herb was recurrently natural fiber participating in crowns and garlands to be tattered

drank, in a small time it easeth all griping pains, turbulent and choleric

humours in the stand for, fury or stomach."

In all probability the two furthermost scandalous uses for powdered ivy were its use for

PAINTER'S Bellyache (Decree POISONING) AND Sciatica. Gill tea was the

And, according to Greek physician Dioscorides, "deficient a dram of the

plants someone high in foure ounces and a deficient of faire water for 40-50

To Extract or Not to Extract

Yes, that one short plant that you are so quick to withdraw out had all

folks uses. And, as I unwind this, powdered ivy is someone strenuous for use in

Did you know that powdered ivy acts as a stodgy groundcover and keeps the

Sunday, 8 July 2012 June 6 Non Dual Awareness

June 6 Non Dual Awareness
Dear Friends,

http://www.innerfrontier.org/Practices/NonDualAwareness.htm

Be Well.

David

NON-DUAL AWARENESS

In certain remarkable Eastern spiritual teachings the entire path revolves around entering our inherent pure awareness, pure consciousness, pure being, and residing there. Seer and seen merge into a global awareness which excludes nothing, has no center and no separation between observer and observed. The ego, at least temporarily, evaporates. Unfiltered, unfettered consciousness replaces ego as the organizing structure of the person. Seeing reveals the pseudo-self of ego as an empty and illusory construction, instantly dismantled by the unifying wholeness of consciousness in which nothing can be truly separate. Instead of our awareness collapsing in egocentric identification with some distraction or problem, we remain in the authentic fullness of consciousness. At first, this realization of the non-dual might only be intellectual. When the true seeing opens, however, it is both a magnificent surprise and patently obvious. Problems dissolve, joy, wonder, and compassion arise naturally.

The extremely rare saint may, on the occasion of this first taste of non-dual awareness, spontaneously enter a stable, lasting and completely effortless abiding in pure awareness, in clear seeing. Such people inspire us with their teaching that enlightenment is at hand, is our true nature, that we need only let go and be fully in the moment.

The great majority of us, though, are not so spiritually gifted that we attain enlightenment on our first contact with pure awareness. We sink back to autopilot. We cannot learn to ride the bike of non-dual awareness without training wheels. If non-dual awareness is our only practice, we either find it rough sledding, fragmentary and momentary, or we delude ourselves into thinking we have been conscious when we have not.

We need an inner structure to enable us to balance between falling out of the present moment, back into the self-centered view on the one hand, and falling off into a semi-conscious absent-mindedness on the other. We need to contact, build, and organize our sensitive energies into a vehicle capable of supporting pure consciousness in a stable manner. So we focus on practices that involve the gradual cultivation of attention, contacting and organizing energies, body awareness, radical acceptance of ourselves and our situation, seeing the processes of attachment and identification operating within us, prayer, and the rest.

Non-dual awareness is not difficult to experience. We need only simplify into the moment, coming to rest in pure awareness itself by backtracking within our ordinary awareness to its natural, wide-open clarity. We go behind sensory experience, behind emotion, behind thought, behind our very self, into the now. We allow the clouds of thought and emotion and pain to float by without obscuring our presence, and we become that vast sky of unadorned awareness. Pure awareness precedes all; it forms the substrate that receives experience. This clear consciousness appears both wonderful and seductive because the relative ease of momentarily entering the utter satisfaction of non-dual awareness is matched by the ease of falling out of it. Non-dual awareness draws us to seek it directly. But to establish ourselves in awareness, we need a balanced path of cultivating our soul, our wholeness.

This conundrum has been widely debated in spiritual circles for millennia. In early Chinese Zen, for example, the discussion took the form of gradual cultivation versus sudden awakening. The wise, like the twelfth-century Korean Zen master Chinul, taught the necessity and complementarity of both. Sudden awakening into non-dual awareness bestows a first release from the egocentric grasping and rejection of experience. With this weight lifted, we can breathe freely the air of the Present. When we return to our usual state, our understanding has changed. From then on, the recognition of clear awareness as our own essence informs our pursuit of practices in the gradual cultivation of our being. Doubts dispelled, our faith and confidence in the spiritual pursuit grow unshakeable. Awakening recurs more frequently and for longer periods, and we discover the satisfaction of living in Presence. No longer divided inside, no longer focused on the division between our self and the rest of the world, we arrive at rest in the non-dual wholeness of awareness.

Yet non-dual awareness, pure consciousness is not the ultimate goal. We are here to serve a great Purpose. Living in awareness accords with and supports that Purpose in important and subtle ways. But our obligations do not end there. Respecting both the traditions of the East with their focus on being and those of the West with their focus on doing, we see that being is not enough. Purity of being, awareness, promotes the purification of our will, the letting go of attachments and egoism. Gradually opening our will to the Divine Will and our heart to the Great Compassionate Heart of the World enables us to discover and create our destiny through our own unique service to the All.

The Dances Of Manchu Shamans
An assortment of of the dances Manchu shamans perform are charity to animal deities. The shaman main performs an prayer bop, sometimes carrying two drums (the alleged "grabbing" and "carrying" drums), and furthermore the shaman enters a bliss door, unusually referred to as the act of "contacting the deity". The shaman embodies the deity, behaving in a sense commissioner of the animal summoned, on a regular basis emitting calls. For phrase, "as soon as the dappled Leopard Burning Deity enters the shaman's man, the shaman soon drops to the gain and begins to footstep on all fours. Sometimes he puts his hands in his lap in order to hum set, and may boom vocally. The shaman's helpers furthermore espouse up some urgent embers which the shaman puts in his babble. At this purpose all the lights go off. The shaman's cheeks are urgent red and he spits sparks, some of which are elder a travel clock longing. Gasping and blowing sounds are heard emanating from the shaman." Explain Over

Saturday, 30 June 2012 Mt11Bm

Mt11Bm
JESUS URGES THEM TO REPENTMatthew 11:20-30Key Verse: 11:24 "But I tell you that it will be more bearable for Sodom on the day of judgment than for you." We are studying Jesus' Galilean ministry. As we studied, Jesuspreached the gospel and healed the sick. He also chose his disciplesand raised them through common life together with him. Jesus' ministrywas indeed intensive. He had done gospel ministry from one village toanother. Actually Jesus might have visited all the villages of theGalilean district. But even though he worked so hard, the fruit ofpeople who believed the kingdom of God was very few in number. So todayJesus laments over the people of Korazin and Bethsaida and Capernaum, who had seen Jesus miracles, heard the good news of the kingdom of God,and seen Jesus healing the sick and casting out demons in many people.Jesus gave them a demonstration that he is the Son of God. Jesus gavethem miracles and intensively preached the kingdom of God so that theymight have eternal life through Jesus Christ and not perish. But theywere very unrepentant. They came to Jesus, saw Jesus preaching andwere amazed and moved. But when they went back to their daily lives, they were just the same ungodly people. In this passage Jesus lamentsover their unbelief and indifference and ignorance, and at the sametime he urges them to repent. Today we also see how Jesus comfortedhimself when people did not repent as he wanted. Finally, instead ofpunishing them, Jesus gave them the way of true rest. May God give usthe spirit of repentance and help us learn the way of true rest throughthis passage.First, Jesus laments over unrepentant people. As we studied, Jesusbegan his messianic ministry in the Galilean district. But after a longtime Jesus denounced the cities in which most of his miracles had beenperformed, because they did not repent. Jesus cursed them. Look atverses 21-22. Woe to you, Korazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! If themiracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre andSidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. But Itell you, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on the day ofjudgment than for you. Here we see that they had seen enough of what Jesus was doing. Itwas preaching the good news of the kingdom of God by performingmiracles and healing the sick so that they might repent and believe inthe kingdom of God. Wherever Jesus was, a crowd of people followed him to hear the goodnews of the kingdom of God and also to see his miraculous signs. Theysaid many wows. Some seemed to believe. For example, in John's Gospelchapter 6, five thousand people followed Jesus because they ate breadand fish made out of five loaves and two fish by the miracle of Jesus(Jn 6:1-15). But when Jesus talked about heavenly bread, they insistedon having free earthly bread. Jesus talked to them again and againabout heavenly bread. They were discouraged and ran away one by oneuntil only the disciples were left. Their purpose of following Jesuswas to get some bread. Some followed Jesus to entertain themselves byseeing Jesus miraculous signs performed on the lepers and the blind andthe paralytics. But when they went home, their lifestyle did notchange at all. In order to live in this world forever, they dideverything by all means. So Jesus said to them, Woe to you Korazin!Woe to you Bethsaida! If the miracles that were performed in you hadbeen performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago insackcloth and ashes. Jesus laments that his chosen people never received the long-awaitedMessiah's divine words. Rather, some Gentile people responded. So Jesussaid, Your punishment on judgment day will be unbearable. Look at verse 23. And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted up to theskies? No, you will go down to the depths. If the miracles that wereperformed in you had been performed in Sodom, it would have remained tothis day. Here Jesus rebukes the people of Capernaum. At that timeCapernaum was one of the important cities in Galilee. It was theheadquarters of Jesus' messianic ministry. It was a most prosperousbusiness center. In addition, a Roman regiment was stationed there. And the tax collector Levi's office was there. Later this tax collectorwas called to be a disciple of Jesus. His name was changed to Matthew, the greatest teacher of humanity in history. Because Capernaum was aprosperous city, people were rich for themselves and very poor towardGod. Even though the Messiah came and worked centering in Capernaum, people's responses were very indifferent; they thought Jesus was only alittle bit more than an ordinary man. So Jesus lamented, saying, Andyou, Capernaum, will you be lifted up to the skies? No, you will godown to the depths. If the miracles that were performed in you had beenperformed in Sodom, it would have remained to this day. According toJesus' lament, the people of Capernaum were not better than the peopleof Sodom and Gomorrah. Finally Jesus told them that those who reject the good news aboutthe kingdom of God will go to hell, and their punishment will be worsethan that of the people of Sodom and Gomorrah. Usually we think thatthe people of Sodom and Gomorrah received the most terrible punishmentby fire. But the people of Capernaum would be even hotter than thepeople of Sodom and Gomorrah. Jesus preached the good news of the kingdom of God. But they did notaccept. They were busy. They wanted to be great and wealthy and theywanted to live in this world forever. They were indeed ignorant andungodly people. They were like pigs before the butchers. They were likecattle before the huge slaughterhouse. They had a premonition thatsomething was going to happen, but they did not know they were goinginto the slaughterhouse. But Jesus knew and he urged them to repent.Second, the meaning of repentance. When we consider our human life, itseems that we are born of a woman and are going to a graveyard. Duringthe time in between, we work hard to succeed, to make money, and tobecome a small and great man. In order to survive in the world, eachperson unintentionally becomes selfish and self-centered. They do notthink about the invisible spiritual world or the kingdom of God. Soeven if many attend churches, they do not know the true meaning ofrepentance. They think that if they go to church, they will go to thekingdom of God by the grace of God. The grace of God is given to usthrough the message of the kingdom of God. Mark 1:15 says, The timehas come. The kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the goodnews! We must know that believing in Jesus and going to the kingdom ofGod is everything. Suppose a person works hard and gains honor andwealth. He cannot keep it forever. Therefore, believing the good newsof the kingdom of God should be the entire plan of our lives. Andbelieving the kingdom of God should be the entire purpose and meaningof life. And preaching the kingdom of God should be one's life mission. But these days, by the Biblical conception, there are too many oldwineskin kind of people. They think that believing is nothing more thanone of their activities for survival in this hard world. We mustseriously think about why Jesus preached the kingdom of God as a matterof first importance. Jesus also urged repentance to all people. What is repentance?Repentance is turning one's worldly lifestyle to the lifestyle Godwants us to have. For example, to one who lived for his pig or cowbusiness as his life purpose, repentance means to change his lifestyleto live for the glory of God. Repentance is turning around from theworld to God. Repentance is changing one's value system from the worldto the kingdom of God. Repentance is changing one's desire fromenjoying the things of the world, like wine or women, to enjoying Godin one's heart. Repentance is to see that the present life is temporaland the kingdom of God is everlasting. When we repent, we can obtainthe kingdom of God. Repentance is to become great and wealthy. Forexample, Abraham was a 75-year-old man who was a very fatalistic personwith no son. So he had no grandsons to enjoy. But God promised him,You will be great and you will be a blessing (Ge 12:2). When Abrahamchanged his way of thinking from fatalism to faith in God, he finallybecame the greatest man in the world. Even in the former Soviet Unionso many are named after Abraham. Our greatest president's name wasAbraham Lincoln. As God promised, he made Abraham a very great andwealthy man. Abraham didn't have to cry like Reptavia in Fiddler onthe Roof, singing, If I were a rich man... God blessed himabundantly. Now his descendants are like the stars in the sky and thesand on the seashore. His name is so great that all Christians and evenmost non-Christians know that he is the ancestor of faith and thegreatest man together with David and after Jesus. This is the reasonJesus delivered the message of repentance. But the people of Korazin,Bethsaida and Capernaum did not repent. So Jesus had to curse them.Actually, it was not really a curse, but an expression of Jesus' deepsorrow and lamenting over the people.Third, Jesus comforts himself (25-27). Look at verses 25-26. At thattime Jesus said, I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, andrevealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this was your goodpleasure. One young man wanted to be a Ph.D. and an honorable person. But after 16 years had elapsed he still could not get a Ph.D. So heshot his advisor and he also shot himself in the head. The real problemwas his discouragement. He had wanted to marry after getting a Ph.D.His age was already 40. But he could not marry. He could not get aPh.D. So he killed himself. Jesus discouragement was even more thanthis. Yet Jesus saw that the good news of the kingdom of God was notaccepted by the wise and learned but was revealed to little children. Here, little children means those who are pure in heart. Their numberwas very few. Maybe Jesus made one hundred thousand telephone calls andhad ten thousand rejections and engaged in mass evangelism and visitingfrom village to village. But the result was that only several peoplewere left. Here we learn that we don t have to be discouraged becauseof the hardship to fish sheep and raise them as disciples. Jesusexperienced the same thing. But Jesus was overjoyed by God's wisdom.Jesus said, Because you have hidden these things from the wise andlearned and revealed them to little children (25). It was the exactexpression that only a few sheep were left. Jesus also comforted himself. Look at verse 27. All things havebeen committed to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except theFather, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whomthe Son chooses to reveal him. This verse is a little longer, but itis the same as John 15:1, which says, I am the true vine, and myFather is the gardener. Jesus' relationship with God was absolutelyinseparable. It was like a vine and branch. Jesus was greatly comfortedand rejoiced even if heaven fell and the earth cracked. It didn tmatter to Jesus, if only he had a personal relationship with God.Fourth, Take my yoke (28-30). People of the world pretend to be greatand wealthy. They only enjoy their lives. In fact, there are manypeople who enjoy their lives more than enough. They count the longweekend holidays and make a perfect schedule to enjoy their lives. Theyseek pleasure in going around to 120 kinds of restaurants and go to therestroom a lot. Still, they go around to all the restaurants of 170nations which are in the Chicago and Los Angeles areas. But actuallythey are very restless. After having a decent party, husbands and wivesshout and fight. One housewife was beaten up several years by herhusband. One night she thought if she had to be beaten up like this, she wanted to die fighting with her husband. So she made a fist tightlyand began to fight with her husband. By one punch her husband wasthrown to the wall. Then she got the confidence to lift him up andthrow him to the other wall. They are a renowned university professorcouple. The more the people of the world have fun, the more they feelempty and meaningless. The people of the world enjoy immoral lives. Most men think they can enjoy many women because they are mosthandsome. Actually, most of them look like Cambodian refugees. True rest comes from Jesus. True rest comes when we carry out God'smission assigned to us. So Jesus said, Take my yoke upon you and learnfrom me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find restfor your souls (29). Can you find some other way to truly rest? No.Jesus word is the only way to have true rest. Therefore, let's take hisyoke upon us and learn from our Lord Jesus Christ.
