Monday, 9 June 2014 Feast Of The Moon Cakes

Feast Of The Moon Cakes
"ARTEMIS "WAS THE "GODDESS" OF THE HUNT AND THE MOON, AND LIKE HER TWIN BROTHER, APOLLO, SHE HAD A WIDE RANGE OF FUNCTIONS IN GREEK MYTHOLOGY. AS A VIRGIN GODDESS, SHE WAS FIERCELY PROTECTIVE OF HER OWN CHASTITY AND THAT OF THE BAND OF MAIDENS WHO RAN BESIDE HER. "ARTEMIS" LOVED ALL OF THE ANIMALS OF THE FOREST, BUT HER FAVORITE WAS THE DEER. ACCORDING TO THE MYTH, WHEN SHE WAS VERY YOUNG, SHE WENT TO HER FATHER, "ZEU"S, AND PLEADED WITH HIM TO ALLOW HER TO LIVE A FREE AND HAPPY LIFE UPON THE BEAUTIFUL MOUNTAINS. "ZEUS "GRANTED HER WISH, AND THIS WAS HOW SHE BECAME THE GREAT HUNTRESS GODDESS OF THE FIELDS AND FORESTS.

AS "APOLLO" WAS THE GOD OF THE SUN AND THE BRIGHT DAYLIGHT, SO "ARTEMIS" WAS THE GODDESS OF THE MOON WHO BROUGHT LIGHT TO THE DARKNESS. SHE WORE A CROWN SHAPED LIKE A CRESCENT MOON UPON HER HEAD. SHE LOVED TO HUNT BY MOONLIGHT; AND WHEN THE GREEKS MADE STATUES OF HER, THEY SOMETIMES REPRESENTED HER WITH A TORCH HELD HIGH IN ONE HAND AND A BOW IN THE OTHER. OAK GROVES AND FRESHWATER SPRINGS WERE ESPECIALLY FAVORED BY "ARTEMIS. "

ON THIS DAY IN ANCIENT GREECE, PEOPLE HONORED THE MOON GODDESS, "ARTEMIS," WITH THE FEAST OF THE "MOON CAKES". THE ORIGINAL FESTIVAL APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN ONE OF SYMBOLIC HUMAN SACRIFICE. OFFERINGS OF THESE "MOON CAKES", STUDDED WITH CANDLES, WERE PRESENTED TO THE GODDESS AT THIS FESTIVAL. THIS CUSTOM IS STILL SEEN WITH OUR OWN BIRTHDAY CAKES.

Thursday, 8 May 2014 War Of The Gods And The Titans

War Of The Gods And The Titans
In Greek mythology the Titanomachy, or War of the Titans, was the ten-year series of battles which were fought in between the two camps of deities long before the existence of mankind: the Titans of Atlantis and the Olympians, who would come to reign on Mount Olympus. This Titanomachia is also known as the Battle of the Titans, Battle of Gods, or just The Titan War. It was fought to decide who would become the rulers.

Greeks of the Classical age knew of several poems about the war between the gods and many of the Titans. The dominant one, and the only one that has survived, is the Theogony attributed to Hesiod. The stage for this important battle was set after the youngest Titan, Cronus (Kronos), overthrew his own father, Uranus, with the help of his mother, Gaia. Cronus took his father's throne after dispatching Uranus. He then secured his power by re-imprisoning his siblings the Hecatonchires and Cyclopes, and his siblings the Gigantes, in Tartarus. After freeing his siblings, Zeus led them in rebellion against the Titans. Hesiod, Theogony (8th or 7th B.C.): "The Olympian Lightener [Zeus] called all the deathless gods to great Olympos, and said that whosoever of the gods would fight with him against the Titans, he would not cast him out from his rights, but each should have the office which he had before amongst the deathless gods." Zeus then waged a war against his father with his disgorged brothers and sisters as allies: Hestia, Demeter, Hera, Hades, and Poseidon. Zeus released the Hecatonchires and the Cyclopes from the earth (where they had been imprisoned by Cronus) and they allied with him as well. The Hecatonchires hurled stones, and the Cyclopes forged for Zeus his iconic thunder and lightning. Fighting on the other side allied with Cronus were the other Titans with the important exception of Themis and her son Prometheus who allied with Zeus. Atlas was an important leader on the side of Cronus. The war lasted ten years, but eventually Zeus and the other Olympians won, the Titans were imprisoned in Tartarus, and the Hecatonchires were made their guards. Atlas was given the special punishment of holding up the sky. In some accounts, when Zeus became secure in his power he relented and gave the Titans their freedom. According to Hyginus, the cause of the Titan War is as follows: "After Hera saw that Epaphus, born of a concubine, ruled such a great kingdom (Egypt), she saw to it that he should be killed while hunting, and encouraged the Titans to drive Zeus from the kingdom and restore it to Cronus, (Saturn). When they tried to mount heaven, Zeus with the help of Athena, Apollo, and Artemis, cast them headlong into Tartarus. On Atlas, who had been their leader, he put the vault of the sky." Following their final victory, the three brothers divided the world amongst themselves: Zeus was given domain over the sky and the air, and was recognized as overlord. Poseidon was given the sea and all the waters, whereas Hades was given the Underworld, the realm of the dead. Each of the other gods was allotted powers according to the nature and proclivities of each. The earth was left common to all to do as they pleased, even to run counter to one another, unless the brothers were called to intervene. These Greek stories of the Titan War fall into a class of similar myths throughout Europe and the Near East, where one generation of a race or group of gods by and large opposes the dominant one, often the parent civilization. Sometimes the Elder Gods are supplanted. Sometimes the rebels gods lose, and are either cast out of power entirely or incorporated into the existing pantheon. Other examples might include the ancient Sumerian and Babylonian creation epic Enuma Elish, the Hittite "Kingship in Heaven" Kumarbi narrative, the struggle between the Tuatha D'e Danann and the Fomorians in Celtic mythology, The AEsir-Vanir War in Scandinavian Norse mythology, and the obscure generational conflict documented in Ugaritic fragments.

In the Cretan tradition, the Titans were portrayed as agrarian gods who lived in the vicinity of Knossos in Crete where they ruled over mankind during the Golden Age. At this time the Earth produced an endless bounty, and presented the Titans with the first sickle for the harvest. The Sicilian myths also speak of the Titans harvesting the first grain. In the Thrakian and Thessalian tradition, the Titans were portrayed as a barbarous tribe of giants who made war on the gods. They were almost indistinguishable from the Thrakian Gigantes of Pallene. These barbarian gods once snuck into Olympos, their faces smeared with with white chalk (titanos), and seized the child Zagreus who was seated on the throne. Certain local landmarks on the mountainous borders of Thessalia and Thrake were apparently identified with this Titan-story: including the river Titaressos whose murky waters were said to be drawn from the infernal Styx, and Mount Titanos or Titarios opposite Olympos whose deposits of white-chalk gypsum were the Titans' disguise. The individual Titans also turn up in the guise of obscure local gods with minor cults in the regions of central and southern Greece. Some of the Titans were also apparently gods of foreign import: Atlas and the fire-stealing Prometheus, for example, were frequently associated with the Anatolian kingdom of Lydia. The cosmic story of five Titans - four holding the corners of heaven - may be Phoenician in origin. Late Greek writers also equated the Titans with Set, enemy of the god-king Osiris in Egyptian myth.

Saturday, 25 May 2013 Hermes The Bad Witch God Of The Week

Hermes The Bad Witch God Of The Week
The Bad Witch's God of the Week is the Greek deity HERMES.

Hermes is the messenger of the gods and also the god of trade, athletics, travel and good fortune. However, he is also the god of thieves and tricksters - which is why I have chosen him as my God of the Week for the first week in April.

Hermes as a child was a real Artful Dodger. His anti-social behaviour began when he was only a few days old and decided to steal a herd of cattle. Not only did he steal them, but he killed two of them for their lovely hides and juicy steaks.

He didn't know they belonged to Apollo but, when the God of Music turned up in a foul temper to get them back, he was very quick at talking his way out of trouble. He persuaded Apollo to accept a lyre strung with cow guts in exchange for the cattle and even convinced him it was a good deal.

According to http://www.godchecker.com/, the son of Zeus' gift of the gab made him the perfect choice for messenger duties:

"Zeus made him a herald and kitted him out with a winged hat and sandals. Powered by these he can zoom all over the place delivering news that's worse than it sounds... Hermes made a vow to Zeus: 'I will never tell lies - although I cannot promise always to tell the whole truth.' Despite wheeling and dealing by the seat of his pants, Hermes always manages to leave his customers perfectly satisfied. Mostly due to his incredibly cunning sales talk."Governing communication, fast travel and a good sales pitch, Hermes seems a suitable god for the times we live in, where these things seem increasingly important.

Hermes' winged sandals give him prime position on the front cover of Trickster Makes This World: How Disruptive Imagination Creates Culture

They arelike to the Norns of Scandinavian mythology. Clotho spun thestripe of life, Lachesis allotted to each one his outside influence and the reelof his life, and Atropos cut the stripe of life. The Greek name for theFates was Moerae, and the Latin name was Parcae. From Clotho we enticement the words "cloth" and "clothes", for background andoutfit. From Atropos, we enticement the words "atropine" and "fritter away",for belladonna (a bitterness), and for the revenue of long-suffering and dying. The Fates were stern and dour goddesses. The stripe is likened to the tissues of the form. How The Rose Got It Thorns The Legend Of Cupid

Cupid actually gave the rose its thorns. One day, Cupid stopped to smell a rose. Hidden inside of that rose there was a bee which shot out and stung him. Exasperated, he pulled out an arrow and shot it right into the flower in anger, resulting in the rose everafter sprouting thorns.

This god of love and desire is one of the reasons why the rose is one of the most celebrated symbols of love in our culture. He appears on and leading up to Valentine's Day as a symbol of both pure and blindlove.

Son of Venus, who is the goddess of beauty, this young man was bound to become the prince of love. The legend of his own love affair begins when a young woman was accoladed for her pristine beauty. Her name was Psyche. His mother, became extremely jealous and sent Cupid to destroy her. She conspired that he should shoot one of his magical darts in Psyche. His darts had the power to make a person fall in love with the first person they laid eyes on after being pierced. Not only should he shoot her with one of these, but he should make sure that the first person she laid eyes on would be hideous. That way, her reputation would be ruined and the only one on earth heralded for beauty would once again be Venus. Cupid went off on his mission.

He found Psyche and poised to shoot his dart. As he pulled out the arrow Cupid accidentally pierced himself. His magic worked on him, and he was head over heels in love with Psyche.

The two became lovers, but Cupid made sure to never allow Psyche to see his face, for fear of displeasing his mother. Years past and Psyche could no longer take the mystery. She decided she must see her lovers face. She tricked Cupid into exposing himself, and he became so angry that he ran away. Psyche wandered all across the land in misery, looking for Cupid. Finally, Zeus took pity on her, and re-united her with Cupid and gave them permission to marry.

DID YOU KNOW?

Cupid is the father or Pleasure. No, really. He and Psyche gave birth to a daughter, whom they named Pleasure.

Polytheism And Olympian Spirits

The Olympians

The original 'Olympian Spirits' [pre-dating the Olympian Spirits of Renaissance grimoires like the Arbatel of Magick and the Magia Verum, The Grimoire of Turiel] were from ancient Greece. They were the twelve gods of Olympia, who lived atop Mt. Olympus in the legends of Greek myth.

The story begins with Cronus [and his wife Rhea] Together they created the 12 Olympian gods. Cronus had come to power when he castrated his father, Uranus. For punishment he was commanded to eat his children as they were born. Rhea, who feared loosing her children, came to the rescue by tricking Cronus into swallowing a rock - instead of his child Zeus. Zeus escaped this certain fate and grew up to revolt against Cronus and the Titans by defeating them and banishing them to the underworld, known as Tartarus

So here we have the traditional Olympian Spirits all of which originated from the Father God, Chronus [Saturn]

* Zeus -The Father God, and the god of the Sky, the Rain and the thunder [Jupiter]

* Poseidon - God of the Seas, the oceans and the Brother of Zeus. Second only in command [Neptune]

* Hades - Ruler of the underworld and the Dead. Brother to Zeus and Poseidon. As an underworld god he is the guardian of the treasures of the earth [Pluto]

* Hestia - The goddess of the hearth and the home [Vesta]

* Hera - The wife of Zeus, and the goddess of marriage. Also much trouble for Zeus even though she is his companion [Juno]

* Ares - The god of war and military, and the son of Zeus and Hera. [Mars]

* Athena - Goddess of honor and battle, daughter of Zeus [Minerva]

* Apollo - The god of the Sun; bringer of enlightenment and doom. God of the lyre and of the deadly silver arrows which he shoots from afar. [Sun]

* Aphrodite - Goddess of love and passion, wife of Hephaestus, but who charmed the likes of gods such as Hermes and Ares [Venus]

* Hermes - Messenger of the gods, and the god of thieves and commerce. [Mercury]

* Artemis - Daughter of Zeus and sister of Apollo. Goddess of chastity and childbirth, often associated with Hecate [Diana, Moon]

* Hephaestus - The son of Zeus and Hera, known as the ugly and lame god who was cast from the cliffs of Mt. Olympus. He is the god of the forge and of metal working. Also known as Vulcan [Traditional ruler of Virgo]
