* DAGDAGAMIYAN - A female spirit who causes sickness in children for playing in places where the harvest is being done.
* DARUPAYPAY - Devours the palay stored in the hut before it is transferred to the granary.
* GINUUDAN - Come to measure the containers of palay, and causes it to dwindle.
* SILDADO - Resembles a horse, and kills children who play noisily outside the house.
* INARGAY - Kills people during harvest time. When inapugan, a ritual plant is offered to Inargay, the following prayer is recited by the Isneg farmer: "Iapugko iyaw Inargay ta dinaami patpatay" (I offer this betel to you, Inargay, so that you may not kill us).
* ALIPUGPUG - A good harvest is portended by the rising of a little whirlwind from the burned field. This, it is said, is the spirit of Alipugpug.
* PILAY - Rice pudding is offered to Pilay, the spirit of the rice, who resides on the paga, a shelf above the Isneg hearth. This is the pisi, the ritual offering of food to the spirits. The old woman who performs this utters the following prayer: "Ne uwamo ilay ta ubatbattugammo ya an-ana-a, umaammo ka mabtugda peyan" (Here, this is yours, Pilay, so that you feed my children fully, and make sure that they are always satisfied). Another ritual is performed right in the fields where the harvest is going on. The amulets inapugan, takkag (a kind of fern), and herbs are tied to a stalk of palay, which later will be place in the granary before the other palay. Again, these are reserved for Pilay. In case a new granary is built, and the contents of the old granary transferred, the spirit's special share is also transferred to the new place. It is never consumed.

There are so many festivals happening this week, including Easter and St George's Day, that it was hard to decide which to choose as my Festival of the Week.

But, instead of going for either of those famous celebrations, I am picking Earth Day, which takes place on 22 April.

Earth Day is intended to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth's natural environment; it is a time to honour the plants, trees, wildlife and land around us and to do something to help them thrive. The Earth Day website has lots of suggestions for actions or pledges you could make to help the environment, as well as public events taking place on April 22.

FLOWER-POT DAY

One simple suggestion is to give someone you know a potted plant as a gift - an idea being promoted as Flower-Pot Day, which is almost a separate event to Earth Day but also happening on 22 April.

The Flower-Pot Day website says: "Decorating homes and work places with plants improves our life condition on Earth. Plants use carbon dioxide, the cause of the greenhouse effect and climate change, and emit oxygen. Flower-pot Day is an action to be done on 22nd April, already Earth's Day, and is about giving each other plants."

SING TO THE TREES AND CREATE YOUR OWN WOODSTOCK

Another Earth Day action being promoted is to sing to a tree. This idea is being called Create Your Own Woodstock.

OK, maybe you need to get in touch with your inner tree-hugging hippy to take part in this one, but apparently last year more than 3,000 people from 39 countries and 30 states sang to trees on Earth Day.

However, trees are important. They are vital to our continued existence on Earth and every year a rain forest area larger than England is cut down. Singing to them might not actually do much to stop this deforestation, but if trees do have spirits then I'm sure it will cheer them up.

The idea behind Create Your Own Woodstock is to get together with a group of friends at midday on 22 April and sing to a tree. The people promoting the idea have put together this short ritual you can do if you like:

1. Circle the tree.

2. If there are children have them be in an inner circle. They will be our next caretakers and we want to empower them with our song.

3. Place your left hand on your heart and extend your right hand towards the tree.

4. Silently name yourself and your intention and how you wish to link. If you are a small group you can do this out loud. Ex: I am Susan, I sing for the trees, for White Leaved Oak and the Holy Thorn, for the Joshua Trees in the Nevada dessert, for the trees in Japan, for all trees destroyed by greed, for trees that are dying or disappeared. I link with the trees in North Carolina, for the junipers in New Mexico and all trees around the world. I send them my love.

5. Breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth three times, feeling your love for this tree and setting an intention for healing and linking with the other trees around the world.

6. Tone on an Ah voice, the sound of the heart. If you can tone the note F# a note related to the heart and to many sacred places around the world.

7. Allow this note to change and shift. Explore your voices with the intention of sending the song to the children and to the trees. It doesn't matter what your singing voice is like. What matters is the love and intention you are sending.

8. Allow the toning to come to an end. Stand in silence.

9. Listen for a message from the trees.

10. Share.

11. Sing whatever tree songs or Earth chants you know.

12. Offer ribbons to the tree.

PFL EARTH DAY EVENT

If you live near London, the Pagan Federation London is running an Earth Day event in Trent Park on 22 April from 2pm-5pm.

It is an open event that anyone can turn up and take part in. There will a variety of celebrations to celebrate Earth Day including Earth-centred drumming, meditation, a picnic and creative work. Trent Park is in Enfield, London N14 4XS and is a five-minute walk from Cockfosters underground station.

TREES AND THE MOON

The first timekeeper was the Moon. Our earliest ancestors living as close to the earth as they did, would not have been able to help noticing the regularity of the lunar cycles. Women would have noticed their bleeding came and went with a particular phase of the moon -- most likely the dark moon associated with death and the void. Ovulation, the preparation of the womb for the insemination of life, would have been linked to the full moon. Our ancestors would, of course, have noted the passing of the months by the changing moon, the transformations of the seasons by alterations of the land, and the renewing cycle of the year at the crux of the thirteenth moon when the world was plunged into darkness.

Trees display the changing seasons quickly and dramatically. When trees begin and bud and burst into flower, we know that it is Spring and the days will grow longer and warmer. When the flowers turn in on themselves and become nuts, fruits, and seeds among leaves of lush and vivid green, it is a sure sign of Summer. When the trees start to turn golden, flame, russet, and brown, we know that Autumn has arrived and that the bare bones of Winter will follow like Fate.

So it is not difficult to understand how the moons were linked with the trees, and how someone might notice how trees express the characteristics of the seasons, and might suggest a connection that not only allows people to tell what season, and more precisely, what month it is, but also to know the qualities of that month and how to prepare for it.

Not all Faery Seers will agree the following associations of months and trees, but it seems most fitting to place Birch at the threshold of the New Year.

TREES AS ORACLES

Our early ancestors would also have noticed how trees begin in the Underworld and reach up to touch the sky. There was a time when people saw the sky as a great dome set over the earth, so it must have seemed very magical that the trees could seem to touch the roof of the sky. Birds also live among the trees, fly through the branches and across the sky. Some birds migrate on schedule and were thus also tellers of the time. The coming of winter could be judged more exactly by when the birds chose to leave and how long they chose to stay. Thus our ancestors foretold the future by the flight of birds, and they used the patterns of the crossing branches to divine the deeper messages of earth and sky.

As the trees touch the sky, they also delve deep into the earth. In many traditions the place below the ground is the realm of the dead. This makes sense when we know that for many cultures, the dead are buried in the earth. Faeries, who are the spirits of ancestors, and even old gods "killed" by the invading cultures, also live down below in the Underworld. Both ancestors and Faeries have magical powers -- living among the roots and seeds, they may have been credited with maintaining the fertility of the soil, of making the crops grow and even making the earth give birth to animals and humans alike. Thus, the trees join all the worlds: the Underworld of ancestors and faeries, the middle ground of earthly life, and the sky of weather, sun, moon, stars, and the birds who are their messengers.

Would it not be too far fetched then to see how our ancestors may have thought that the Gods spoke to them through the trees?

Among the many powers attributed to witches is the fantastic ability to summon storms, stir winds, and call forth any manner of precipitation as well as to withhold life giving waters to blight crops, and to destroy homes and villages with mighty winds and torrents of rain.

As an agricultural society our continued existence depended (and still largely depends) on knowing the weather in our area. People who stayed in one area over long periods of time noticed the cyclic nature of weather patterns and developed signs and omens to help them predict the weather. One of the most famous atmospheric predictors of the weather used by sailors goes "red sky at night, sailor's delight; red sky in the morning, sailor's warning. Omens which predict rain include, but are not limited to, the following:

* To see a ring around the moon, means rain; in winter it could mean snow.
* When the crescent moon is shaped like an upside down U, portends drought.
* When the crescent moon is shaped like a U, it means rain.
* When the Sun sets behind a cloud means rain.

While some witches looked to the heavens for answers, others looked to the earth for natural predictors. A now famous ritual which takes place in Pennsylvania near the end of every winter entails waiting to see if a ground hog will see his shadow or not to determine the length of winter. Other natural predictors include,

* To hear frogs croaking in the evening means rain.
* Bird often roost early and eat more just before rain.
* Pigs will often insulate themselves before a cold snap.
* When cows lied down in a field it portend rain.
* When a squirrels tail is very bushy, it portends a harsh winter.

In addition, humans who have broken bones have often discovered that their bones ache right before a storm; human hair is also very responsive to the amount of moisture in the air. When the air is dry, hair shrinks and curls up, however when the air is moist (indicating rain) it swells and straightens out. My own grandmother could always smell the rain coming and sense the drop in temperature or atmospheric pressure right before it rained.

A relatively new belief in the area of weather predictors goes that whenever NASA sends a rocket into space, it will rain. But this is in mainly in the tri-state area around Cape Canaveral in Florida.

When the signs weren't favorable, witches developed spells and rituals to help turn the odds in their favor. Some of the methods witches have used to shape the weather include:

* Tying up winds in a rope or string and slowly untying the knots to release the winds. These types of ropes were often sold to sailors in the Middle Ages.
* A rather famous spell to call a storm includes dipping a rag in water and beating it against a rock in the Devil's name.
* Burn the picture of a deformed or otherwise ugly person and the heavens will cry for them out of pity.
* Place the 6th Pentacle of the Moon in water and it will rain as long as the Pentacle remains there.
* Dip a broom in salted water and flick it to the four directions to bring rain.
* Throwing rice in the air is thought to cause rain. Rice is thrown at weddings to bring good luck to the couple by washing away ill luck.
* Among Native Americans, the Rain Dance is a ceremony performed to bring rain and ensure the crops.
* Hang a dead snake in a tree and it will rain so long as the snake remains in the tree.
* Burning Ferns is said to bring rain as is burning cotton.

As witches, we align ourselves with the particular energy of our area each time we call the elements to our rituals, which I believe is the first step in beginning to manipulate the weather. If we move to a new location, we need to introduce ourselves to the energy patterns of the place in which we live and keep a detailed journal on weather patterns, local lore, etc...

In my personal practices in affecting the weather, I normally stand with my feet together and imagine them as deep roots in the earth. I slowly raise my arms up to the sky and feel the energy of Mother Earth traveling up my feet, spine, arms and out my hands and direct this energy at the sky. Sometimes I hold my hands slightly before me and slowly circle around clockwise. I visualize the rain (or other phenomenon) that is needed, and usually verbalize my goal in the form of a spell. My favorite rain spell/chant is "Ice, Cloud, Storm" which represents the three states of matter as relating to water (solid, gas, and liquid respectively.). So this method is about changing the gaseous clouds to liquid.

In other instances, I have created my own Weather Map. To make a Weather Map, I either purchase a map of the area I want to affect, or print one offline. I then bless it in the name of the area in the same manner I would a Poppet. Next, I re-create the type of weather I need over the map. For example, if I wanted rain I might paste storm clouds over the map, place clear bowls of water on the map, finger paint with water colors ( a great children's activity) or even pour water over the map. For snow or a cold snap, I could dip the map in water and place it in the freezer, or place a bowl of ice on the map. This type of magick is only limited by your imagination.

That being said, the manipulation of the weather is an area of magick which should always be taken seriously, and not without great thought; as changing the weather in one area can have a direct correlation on the weather in another area and can have undesired affects in what has been termed the Butterfly Effect.
