I just got back from watching this movie. I had such high hopes for it. I love the archetype of the witch, my favorite monster. So where do I begin? I think I will start with the bad so I can end on a positive note.

The movie is a mixture of "Harry Potter", "Twilight", and "Hair Spray". The Southern accents are atrocious. The movie does not give the feeling that it is set in a "real" universe but always unfolds as if it is a fairy tale. There is little to no character development. Every single Southern cliche is crammed into this movie. There are a couple of scenes of Christian-bashing. The movie has some sexist scenes which really surprised me since the author of the books is a woman. I'll go ahead and spoil this little bit. In Beautiful Creatures witches don't like the term witch and prefer the term 'caster' instead. Well, when a caster turns 16 they are claimed for either the darkness or the light. Male casters are masters of their own fate and can choose to be either of the darkness of the light. Female casters are slaves to their destinies and cannot choose. They are simply claimed by either good or evil despite their free will. The way it is presented is that a woman has both a false self and secret self. When young the female doesn't know her secret self and when she turns 16 it rears it's head and that's who she really is, either good or evil. So men are masters of their fate while women are slaves to destiny. I really disliked that. Another thing I disliked is the use of the "magical negro", a supporting black character who has magical powers and who saves the day but has zero character development. It's like they only exist to save white people. There are like 2 black characters in this movie and the main woman is of the "magical negro" variety. That really bothered me. I really disliked the slant toward evil. Evil or dark casters are portrayed as far more seductive and fun while the good casters all look like eccentric drag queens. There are sub-plots and stories/elements that are not properly covered and don't quite make sense. There is a snow scene where the snow looks incredibly fake and none of the snow gets in Lena, the female lead's hair. Then the full moon is shown during the day time. Now, the moon can appear in the day time sky but it never appears in the day light as a full moon. The full moon always rises after sunset. Finally, winter time in South Carolina is portrayed as if there are no seasons. Like it's summer year-round.

So now for the good parts. Unfortunately this will be a rather short paragraph. The good things about this movie is that the scenery was very beautiful. The special effects were also good. There is a scene where the "magical negro" is offering food at the grave of her uncle. She was giving her uncle some of his favorite food in life in return for his help. That was a good scene. That's about it.

On a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the lowest and 10 being the highest, I give this movie a 5. It's perfectly average in every way.

Written and narrated by acclaimed British intellectual Jonathan Miller - author, lecturer, TV producer/host, director of theater, opera and film, and neurologist - A Brief History of Disbelief originally aired on the BBC in the U.K. It was the first-ever historical look at the controversial topic on television. It is only during the last few years in the U.S. that atheism can be fully and widely discussed. Many leaders and celebrities are "coming out of the closet." "In making this series I have inevitably discovered that the history of faith and doubt is a great deal more complicated that it might seem," Jonathan Miller declares. Among the program's surprising revelations is that philosophy, not science as often assumed, played a larger role in the gradual erosion of belief. And contrary to what many Christian fundamentalists today consider America's founding principles, the first presidents were actually skeptical of religion. A Brief History of Disbelief traces the history of the first "unbelievers" in ancient Greece through the role of disbelief in America's founding to its flourishing today.

Part I: Shadows of Doubt

Miller visits the site of the absent Twin Towers to consider the religious implications of 9/11 and meets Arthur Miller and the philosopher Colin McGinn. He searches for evidence of the first "unbelievers" in ancient Greece and examines some of the modern theories around why people have always tended to believe in mythology and magic.

Part II: Noughts and Crosses

With the domination of Christianity from 500 AD, Miller wonders how disbelief began to re-emerge in the 15th and 16th centuries. He discovers that division within the Church played a more powerful role than the scientific discoveries of the period. He also visits Paris, the home of the 18th century atheist Baron D'Holbach, and shows how politically dangerous it was to undermine the religious faith of the masses.

The Final Hour

The history of disbelief continues with the ideas of self-taught philosopher Thomas Paine, the revolutionary studies of geology, and the evolutionary theories of Darwin. Miller looks at the Freudian view that religion is a "thought disorder." He also examines his motivation behind making the series touching on the issues of death and the religious fanaticism of the 21st century.

I just finished reading this book and it was AWESOME! its been awhile since I read a good ghost story and this one was the perfect find. Carrie Jones is a wonderful Author her books are full of intrigue and mystery and no one writes supernatural like Steven E. Wedel!

Aimee's deceased mother struggled with mental illness and hallucinations, and Aimee thinks it could be hereditary. After all, she sees a shadowy river man where there isn't one. And then there was that time she and her best friend Courtney tried to conjure a spirit with a Ouija board...Alan is Courtney's cousin. His family moved to Maine when Courtney's father went missing. It's not just Alan's dark good looks that make him attractive. He is also totally in touch with a kind of spiritual mysticism from his Native American heritage. If you are a regular reader here (and you are, right?) then you have probably heard me mention one of my favorite authors, Mindy Klasky. Mindy is not only a fabulous author, writing everything from humorous paranormal romance to traditional fantasy to contemporary romance, she is also an amazing editor (who helped me become a much better writer, back in my early days) and an over-all sweetheart.

Many thanks to Deborah, for allowing me to visit and tell you about my middle grade fantasy novel, "Darkbeast". Due to the generosity of my publisher, Simon "> Pursued by Inquisitors who would punish her for heresy, Keara joins a performing troupe of Travelers and tries to find a safe haven for herself and her companion.

When Keara strikes out on the Great Road, she doesn't have a lot of survival skills. She isn't a warrior, capable of holding her own in any physical encounter. She isn't a shrewd merchant, able to negotiate her way in any fiscal transaction. She isn't cloaked in the mystery of her religion, protected by sacred vows (quite the opposite, in fact!)

But Keara has a secret stash of knowledge, information so basic to her life that she scarcely thinks of it as an asset. Keara knows herbs. She knows which plants can heal and which can poison. She has mastered harvesting methods and drying techniques. She has memorized growing seasons, even for rare plants that thrive far from her home.

Keara's herblore is a gift from her strict, demanding mother. Even though Keara would be hard-pressed to admit the truth, she has absorbed her encyclopedic knowledge through hard work and constant repetition. Handling herbs has been necessary for most of Keara's life; it's the only way her widowed mother could support herself and her three daughters.

Throughout "Darkbeast", Keara walks a narrow line about the power of herbs. It is never precisely clear whether her plants work because she has some magical powers, or because she retains ancient, practical lore. Keara might be reaching out to supernatural strength, or she might succeed merely because she has mastered old, forgotten ways.

While writing the novel, I reveled in this ambiguity. I did not want to give my heroine the "flash" of magical powers - specific spells that she could recite, concrete potions that she could brew. I wanted a greater air of mystery, a resonating note of the unknown.

To that end, I varied the herbs I mention by name. Some, like feverfew, are very real. Others, though, are entirely made up, with properties different from any plants in our real world. Readers unfamiliar with herblore might not know what is real and what is created.

And that's the way I like it. Uncertainty is one of the essential flavors of "Darkbeast". As a twelve-year-old fugitive, Keara does not have all the answers about her world. (Sometimes, in fact, she barely knows the questions to ask.) I enjoy putting my readers in the same circumstances, at least part of the time.
