(Crisis Magazine) He blasted big business, Wall Street, big oil, General Motors, "excess profits, millionaires" and the "wealthy." He called out the "corporation executive" for not paying his "fair" share.He attacked "GOP" tax cuts that "spare the rich" and "benefit millionaires."
He advocated wealth redistribution from "greedy corporations" to "health insurance" and "public works projects."
He described himself as "progressive," while his detractors accused him of being a communist.
He adopted slogans like "Forward" and "Change." He wanted to transform America through what he called "fundamental change."
He was skeptical of preachers and their effect on "God-and-gun clinging" Americans, and saw the Catholic Church as an obstacle to his vision for the state. He argued that Christians should support his ideas and enthusiastically sought the support of the "social justice" Religious Left. Moreover, many people were unclear about his personal religious beliefs, including whether he was a Christian.
Who is this man?
If you answered "Barack Obama," you're only half right. The answer is Frank Marshall Davis, Hawaii mentor to a young Barack Obama, and Communist Party member 47544.
Davis was introduced to a nine-year-old Obama in the fall of 1970 by Obama's grandfather, Stanley Dunham, who was seeking a black-male role model or father figure to mentor his grandson. He and the young Obama met many times throughout the 1970s, often for hours at a time late into evenings. Obama refers to Davis literally dozens of times in every part of his bestselling memoirs, "Dreams from My Father".
Long ignored, Davis is the subject of my new book-and Catholics should pay attention, given that Davis had some choice words for them and their church. Not unlike the young man he mentored, Barack Obama, Davis saw the Catholic Church as an obstacle to his vision for the state.
Frank Marshall Davis's vision was a very far-left one. He pushed the federal government to adopt socialist policies, with more and more power concentrated in Washington. He wanted the United States to go the direction of the Soviet Union. And Davis understood that the one institution standing in the way most vehemently was the Roman Catholic Church. "The Catholic hierarchy," he sneered, had launched a "holy war against communism."
Indeed it had-and deservedly so. Nothing anywhere in the world persecuted the religious-and people generally-quite like communism. The Church correctly saw Soviet communism as truly, genuinely evil. But Frank Marshall Davis fully disagreed, and he would target the Church as an obstacle to his plans to "fundamentally change" America.
And so, Davis targeted the Church in commentaries he wrote for the "Chicago Star", the Communist Party publication of which he was the founding editor-in-chief from 1946-48.
In one commentary, a July 20, 1946 piece titled, "A-Bombs for Russia," Davis began by expressing his admiration for Stalin's Russia: "I salute the Soviet Union," stated Davis. "I admire Russia for wiping out an economic system which permitted a handful of rich to exploit and beat gold from the millions of plain people.... As one who believes in freedom and democracy for all, I honor the Red nation."
Yet, as Davis hailed Joe Stalin's state for its alleged freedom and democracy, there was something else he didn't admire: It was the "Big Money Boys" and so-called "prostitute press [that] brazenly solicits public hate for [the Soviet Union]." Among those that Davis listed as "hate evangelists" was Cardinal Francis Spellman, who, by Davis's estimation, longed to "knock out Russia" by bombing it to the Stone Age.
Said Davis: "We've got to make the plain people realize that those hate evangelists preaching war against Russia are their enemies, and that peace, freedom and democracy can come only from forcing official America to work in harmony with the Soviet Union."
Yes, that is, "Stalin's" Soviet Union-which, according to Frank Marshall Davis, wanted peace.
Who was obstructing that peace? Davis blamed Harry Truman, the Marshall Plan, Wall Street, big business, capitalism, the press, and the likes of Cardinal Spellman and the Catholic Church. Not only were these sources "hate evangelists," according to Frank Marshall Davis, but they were the new "Pontius Pilates."
Davis portrayed communism and the Soviet Union as friendly to Christianity; thus, those opposing Soviet communism were, in the words of Frank Marshall Davis, modern-day "Pontius Pilates."
A painful illustration of this thinking was a September 29, 1949 column that Davis wrote for the "Honolulu Record", the Communist Party publication for Hawaii, which he wrote for from 1949-57. Titled, "Challenge to the Church," Davis imagined Judgment Day, where anti-communist Christians would be called to account for their transgressions: "On your Judgment Day, when the Lord will ask you for an account of your stewardship, will... your answer be, 'Lord I was too busy Redbaiting?"
And the Catholic Church especially deserved a good scourging. "The Christian churches, and the Catholic church in particular," preached Barack Obama's mentor, "are making a grievous error in their shortsighted belief that the major enemy of Christianity is Communism."
Not a communist in Moscow would have agreed with Frank Marshall Davis, and the late Lenin would have laughed him out of the country-or thanked him for his efforts.

We launched two websites at once, which is complete insanity (and if we ever try it again, may someone knock us on the head)....Nevertheless, we did it!
The Pagan Voting Project is now up. We may "tweak" it a bit more and add some things, but 99% of it is done. We got a lovely write up at The Witches'Voice this week about that site:

Traffic is very the site is good, thanks to this front page posting at TWV. Within the first evening, 377 people went to the "Register to Vote" page, and almost as many went to the graphics page. This leads us to hope that we can register a goodly numer of Pagan Voters and get the word out about this project (via those graphics) in time for the election in November.
We have also launched the Witches' Ball website, as well, and it looks fabulous. Again, we'll be doing some tweaking (add the costume graphics, names of Sponsors, play with the SilkRoads map, etc.) but this site is 95% done and we're very proud of it.
Both of these sites will be announced at The Witches' Voice. We'll also go to Google for some AdWords advertising, and Snakemoon will add notes in the September newsletter.
We're exhausted, but it was worth it.
Gods, I love these people - what a great group we have. Nothing daunts them.

Free from the psycho-drama of the first film, 'Through a Glass Darkly', the nihilistic despair of the concluding episode 'The Silence' and the incestuous subtext of both of them, 'Winter Light' is nonetheless a shattering, profound and deeply personal work; arguably the essential work in the trilogy not only in that it connects the films that bookend it but because it is the only film in a trilogy exploring faith which has a man of the cloth as its main character.
The disturbed heroine of 'Through a Glass Darkly' makes reference to a "spider god" during her mental turmoil. The phrase recurs in 'Winter Light' in a more contemplative context as Pastor Tomas Ericsson (Gunnar Bjornstrand) addresses his crisis of faith. Unable to provide spiritual comfort or assuage the doubts of his flock, Tomas goes through the motions as he presides over Sunday morning service and evensong. In his occasional candid moments, he names the thing that constitutes his greatest agony: God's silence.
Thus the title of the concluding film. 'The Silence' is a feature-length metaphor for this dispiriting concept. 'The Silence' is one of the most depressing films I've ever seen. It makes your average Andrei Tarkovsky or Bela Tarr opus look like an Ealing comedy.
'Winter Light' isn't much happier. It takes place during a single day, a Sunday. The opening sequence has Tomas conducts the morning service. The church is half empty. Frederik Blom (Olof Thunberg), the organist, checks his watch and almost misses his cue when Tomas concludes his sermon; Algot Frovik (Allan Edwall), the sexton, suffers through the service, crippled, hunched and in pain; the elderly Magdalena (Elsa Ebbesen) mumbles the responses to the prayers and warbles her way off-key through the hymns; heavily pregnant Karin Persson (Gunnel Lindblom) accompanies her depressed and uncommunicative husband Jonas (Max von Sydow) and encourages him to "talk it out" with Tomas after the service; Knut Aronsson (Kolbjorn Knudsen) splutters his way through the hymns as if the words - pious and by rote - have become stuck in his throat; and schoolteacher Marta Lundberg (Ingrid Thulin) carries a torch for Tomas and suppresses a lack of belief in God as long as she can be close to him.
During the course of this single day, Tomas will reject Marta's love, be faced with one of his flock questioning of Christ's suffering, and deal with the aftermath of another's suicide. He will also be confronted with the accusation that his erstwhile passion in his vocation owed more to his late wife's love than God's.
'Winter Light' opens with Sunday morning service, at which attendance barely scrapes double figures. It concludes with evensong, at which only Frederik, Algot and Marta are present. Frederik and Algot because they are required to be, Marta despite Tomas's rejection of her. In spiritual terms, his church is empty. Tomas begins the service nonetheless.
It is to his eternal credit that Bergman the director shoots every scene with complete detachment, just as Bergman the writer employs an observation approach. In both incarnations, Bergman acts not as a commentator or a moralist, but as a witness. He simply observes and records. Reports back. He imbues the accoutrements of communion with as much gravitas as the empty pews and cold architecture of the church. With the exception of a scene in which a character reads a letter and Bergman cuts to a non-naturalistic close-up of the sender reciting the contents of said letter, 'Winter Light' is possessed of enough austere observationalism to almost pass as a documentary.
And this is the key to Bergman's approach to the material. The meaning is in the silences, in the ellipses, in what is unspoken. Is 'Winter Light' about God's silence, or do the silences present spaces in which the doubter can find faith, the questioner receive answers and the helpless benefit from guidance? Is an empty church a symbol of the failure of religion, or less cluttered so that the one person whose belief is in the reckoning can engage with their deepest and darkest conflicts? When Tomas, being driven back to the church for evensong, uses the delay in the barrier at a railway crossing blocking the road to admit that he entered the seminary because of his parents' wishes, is it symbolic of the path he took being adumbrated, or is the eventual lifting of the barrier and his continued journey the more appropriate metaphor?
As an atheist, I find concatenation in much of 'Winter Light' to a rejection of religion. But in Bergman's refusal to call it either way - and in the rigidly ambiguous final scene in which Tomas, preaching to an all but empty church, faces the camera in tight close-up and speaks words in praise of God - Tomas's internal struggle for belief finds an onscreen corollary in which the last few seconds before the screen fades to black could equally denote despair or redemption.

Ok, I'm up for it. The idea that I have that has the most "juice" to it, the one that currently seems out of reach and unrealistic, is my idea to move into a "Vardo Van" - a totally cool, wonderfully colorful, small but efficient, van outfitted much like the Gypsy Vardo's of times gone by. Along with that dream, comes the idea of traveling here and there, blogging along the way, "pitching my tent" so to speak at various places and selling art, telling fortunes, teaching Reiki, talking to animals, telling stories, and being mysterious and magical.
The "how-to" totally eludes me. I'm thinking it would require a significant amount of money for the Vardo Van and the Laptop. Not to mention the self confidence and the courage to do all that other stuff. If I had the money - I'd swallow my fears and go for it. So... how to finance my dream. That's the question. Any ideas?

i want to create an avian rescue. i haven't had a lot of passion about anything for a long time, but when i think of those birds that need to be rescued it gives me energy and i feel the strenght it would take to do it. that says a lot to me these days!

My dream doesn't really involve myself or my family. It involves a family who are friends of mine. My friends Holly and John have a son who is now 15 years old. When he was 11 years old he suffered a stroke and is now quadriplegic. Unfortunately, he also is unable to speak even though the stroke did not affect the part of his brain involving speech. The doctors here in KC don't know why he can't speak. He has a voice but can't get words out, just various grunts. The only way this poor child has to communicate is through very time-consuming yes and no questions. He indicates yes with his eyes and no with a slight hand movement. He has an electric wheelchair but doesn't even have enough hand control to drive it himself.
The sad thing is that he is 100% "there" mentally. He can still spell his favorite word: antidisestablishmentarianism"! He attends school but most of his friends have sort of "moved on" with their lives as teenagers but he is trapped in this body that won't even allow him to speak and I know he is just so miserable! I also feel for his parents, especially Holly, who cares for him full-time.
I have written e-mails to Oprah and Montel in the past but haven't had a response. I just KNOW that if we could get Jeremy on some national show, we could get exposure to his condition and find somebody who can help him get his speech back! That would be the greatest gift we could give that family! As far as we know, he is the ONLY person to have survived a stroke such as this and lived AND still had 100% full mental capacity. Others have either died or are paralyzed, but in a vegetative state mentally. Can you imagine having a severe pain and not being able to tell anybody about it? Can you imagine needing your nose scratched and not only can you not scratch it, you can't ask anyone else to?

Okay so I like this idea of sharing our dreams. Even though we have done this before I think it is good to not only focus our dreams but to put them out there for the universe. My dream is to be the owner of the house at 1305 Owen St. in Saginaw Michigan. To have the wealth to fund or at least the start up funds for a community center where people in the community offer their skills whatever they may be to those in need of those skills. Where adults learn skills, pass along skills to others, adults or children. A place where people with time on their hands could maybe watch the children of people who need to work but can't afford daycare. Whatever the skill it is passed along to the community. From garndening to the arts, computers to automotive. This is something I have had in my heart for a long time.
I would also like to have the wealth to support artists of all kinds. There are so many talented people whose dreams of creating art are squashed by lack of money and resources. I guess I bascially want to be wealthy, wealthy enough to support others in their pursuit of fulfillment.

I'd like to cease working in an attorney's office and write. I like my job but I'd love to be creative. This would also free up time for travel to Mexico and for taking a class on meditation..maybe for learning Reiki. My guide, Ole, keeps teling me to BREATHE. It sounds so simple! I read somewhere that by focusing on the VALUES you wish to accomplish rather than on the MONEY, it helps. So I want to be wealthier, yes. But what I'm really after is FREEDOM to live the creative life I imagine. By focusing on the values I want in my life, it seems that more doors are opening. I'm still broke.. ha ha ha! but the quality time with family and friends, the opportunities to write, the travel to Mexico, all those things are coming into my life right now! Amazing!
