Since at least the late 18th century Masonic writers have sought to establish a link between the Knights Templar and the Freemasons. Freemasonic lore and symbols have been traced to ancient Egypt and Phoenicia. Yet, despite all the books and articles exploring Freemasonry published over the last hundred years, there is one area that has not received attention. It concerns Freemasonry's debt to Islamic mysticism and a shadowy tradition connecting the Masons with the Moors of North Africa.
THE INVOLVEMENT OF FREEMASONS IN THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA IS WELL DOCUMENTED. IN FACT MASONS FEATURED SO PROMINENTLY IN DRAFTING THE AMERICAN DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE THAT MANY PEOPLE BELIEVED IT A THOROUGHLY 'MASONIC PROJECT'. NOT ONLY GEORGE WASHINGTON BUT ALSO THE US FOUNDING FATHERS BENJAMIN FRANKLIN AND THOMAS JEFFERSON WERE HIGH-DEGREE MASONS. MASONRY HAD A PROFOUND INFLUENCE ON THE FORMATION OF AMERICAN SOCIETY, BUT THERE WAS ALSO ANOTHER SECRET POWER WHICH HAS GONE COMPLETELY UNNOTICED.
The Kingdom of Morocco under the leadership of Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdullah, known as King Mohammed III, was the first country in the world to recognise the United States of America as an independent nation in 1777. This historic act by the North African Muslim kingdom highlights the relationship then existing between America's Masonic leaders and the Moors. Before exploring this strange connection further we need to understand the part played by the Moors in the transmission of knowledge to Europe.
Moor is the classical name in Europe of the Muslim people of North Africa. In Spain, where Muslims ruled for over five hundred years, Arabs are still called Moros. The term "Moor" came to be synonymous with "Muslim" in many contexts, for example the Muslim communities in the Philippines are known to this day as Moros. The Supreme Wisdom of the Moors, much of it derived from ancient Egypt, has come to be known as "Moorish Science".
The Moors provided the vital link between ancient and modern civilisation. The light of knowledge which illuminated the Moorish lands of Spain and Sicily was instrumental in dispelling the gloom of ignorance that enveloped mediaeval Europe.
"It was under the influence of Arabian and Moorish revival of culture," writes Robert Briffault in The Making of Humanity, "and not in the 15th century, that the real renaissance took place. Spain and not Italy, was the cradle of the rebirth of Europe. After sinking lower and lower in barbarism, it had reached the darkest depths of ignorance and degradation when the cities of the Saracenic world Baghdad, Cairo, Cordova, Toledo, were growing centres of civilisation and intellectual activity. It was there that the new life arose which was to grow into a new phase of human evolution. From the time when the influence of their culture made itself felt, began the stirring of a new life."
The Orientalist Stanley Lane-Poole acknowledged the great impact Moorish civilisation had on Europe when he wrote:
FOR NEARLY EIGHT CENTURIES UNDER HER MUSLIM RULERS SPAIN SET TO ALL EUROPE A SHINING EXAMPLE OF A CIVILIZED AND ENLIGHTENED STATE. ART, LITERATURE AND SCIENCE PROSPERED AS THEY THEN PROSPERED NOWHERE ELSE IN EUROPE. STUDENTS FLOCKED FROM FRANCE AND GERMANY AND ENGLAND TO DRINK FROM THE FOUNTAINS OF LEARNING WHICH FLOWED ONLY IN THE CITIES OF THE MOORS. THE SURGEONS AND DOCTORS OF ANDALUSIA WERE IN THE VANGUARD OF SCIENCE; WOMEN WERE ENCOURAGED TO DEVOTE THEMSELVES TO SERIOUS STUDY, AND A LADY DOCTOR WAS NOT UNKNOWN AMONG THE PEOPLE OF CORDOVA.1 The 19th century French writer on the esoteric sciences, Gerard Encausse, known as "Papus", noted how "the Gnostic sects, the Arabs, Alchemists, Templars" form a chain transmitting ancient wisdom to the West. This explains why within the Ritual of Freemasonry there is the admission "we came from the East and proceeded to the West." A Masonic author Bernard H. Springett says:

BUT IT IS FREQUENTLY AND SCORNFULLY REJECTED BY THE AVERAGE MASONIC STUDENT...2 So we find that just as Europe borrowed considerably from the learning of the Moors, European Freemasonry took its "secret wisdom" from the Muslim East.
With the end of Moorish rule in Spain, the Europeans began to colonise Africa, Asia and the Americas. In time European Christians conquered Muslim territories and the great debt Western civilisation owed to the Moors was quickly forgotten. By the 18th century European Christians saw themselves as the predestined rulers of the world with a divine mission to "civilise" the heathen. Western historians conveniently ignored the immense contribution of the brilliant and energetic Moorish civilisation in delivering Europe from mediaeval barbarism. We can only conclude this is a result of the pride and presumption of Westerners, which prevent them from recognising the truth or importance of their debts to the East.

"The great thing about the Twin Cities theater community is that not only can you see big lavish productions at the Orpheum, Ordway, or Guthrie, but you can also see small low-tech productions in odd or tiny spaces that will surprise and delight you every bit as much as those big productions, or even moreso. 7th House Theater Collective's 7-person (7 must be their magic number) stripped-down version of the cult horror movie turned off-Broadway musical Little Shop of Horrors" is just such a show. This darkly funny and surprisingly sweet musical about a man-eating plant and the poor schlub who sells his soul to it, featuring a fun doo-wopy score, has long been one of my favorites, but I've never seen it quite like this. This talented young ensemble of seven (with no director to guide them) has put their own creative spin on this classic and created something fresh and fun and original.If you've never seen "Little Shop" in any of its incarnations (see also the 1986 movie), here's a brief plot summary. Aspiring botanist Seymour finds a strange and interesting plant and brings it into Mushnik's Flower shop, where he works with Audrey. He soon finds out that the plant, named Audrey II, will only grow if he gives it blood, but in return it makes Seymour's life wonderful - the failing flower shop flourishes, Seymour becomes famous, and most importantly, he thinks it makes him look better in Audrey's eyes. But the dilemma comes when Seymour needs to find more sources of blood to satisfy Audrey II's growing appetite. He's sold his soul to the devil and there's no turning back.On the tiny stage at Open Eye Figure Theatre, 7th House brings this morbidly hilarious world to life in a delightfully inventive and low-tech way, involving an overhead projector, a plastic shower curtain, a skull, fake blood, and a series of increasingly larger cardboard boxes. The show runs about 90 minutes including a short intermission, which feels exactly the right length. Similar to what Ten Thousand Things does in their productions, they've stripped the show down to its bare essentials to get to the heart of the piece, without any unnecessary fluff.Company member Grant Sorenson plays Seymour with just the right mix of sweetness, lack of self-confidence, and a growing inner determination to do what he has to do to get what he wants in life, mainly Audrey. As Seymour's love, Maeve Moynihan is pitch-perfect, both in her powerful voice and in her portrayal of Audrey's charming ditziness. I've watched Maeve grow up on local stages; just six years ago she was little Carrie Ingalls in a musical version of "Little House on the Prairie" at the Guthrie, and now she's all grown up and playing one of the most iconic roles in musical theater. In between she was young Violet in my favorite Theater Latte Da show "Violet" (when I referred to her as "teenage wonder"), and Dorothy in The "Wizard of Oz" at the Children's Theatre (at which time I said "I only hope that after she becomes a big Broadway star she comes home every now and then to grace us with her talent"). It's a thrill to see her back on stage playing an adult, and I look forward to seeing what her bright future holds. Grant and Maeve make for a completely adorable Seymour and Audrey, and if you don't get chills at the end of "Suddenly Seymour," one of the best musical theater love songs ever written, you probably don't have a soul. Gracie Anderson, Liz Hawkinson, and Catherine Noble as the girl group Greek chorus sound fantastic and deliver the campy material the way you need to - with complete conviction. Robert Frost provides most of the musical accompaniment at the piano and serves as Musical Director, as well as occasionally getting in on the action of the show. Company member David Darrow's take on the gleefully maniacal and sadistic dentist, whether abusing poor Audrey, singing to his mother in a Norman Batesian kind of way, or getting high on laughing gas, is a true delight (and oh, by the way, he also plays guitar, trumpet, and percussion). In a clever twist, both Mr. Mushnik and Audrey II are played by the entire ensemble, which is kind of genius and turns what are usually duets into really fun group numbers in "Mushnik and Son" and "Feed Me." Seeing Seymour surrounded by the voice of the plant in several bodies gives it a whole new dimension.This is only 7th House's third production as a company, after debuting last summer with a groovy production of "Hair", followed earlier this year by the smart and sexy "Cinephilia". If this group of young talented theater artists who have created a space for their work is not yet on your radar, they should be. Their next show is something that makes me very happy - a musical collaboration between David Darrow and the super talented couple Mary Fox and Blake Thomas*. Blake is one of my favorite musicians and an incredibly talented songwriter, and I got a taste of David's songwriting skills in his Fringe show a few years ago, so the two of them writing and creating together is something I would not miss for the world. "Jonah and the Whale" will play in the Guthrie's Studio Theater this December. To be present with the Lord is the earnest longing of every true believer. When and how will this be brought about? The Lord's answer to this question is most illuminating.
In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you,I WILL COME AGAIN AND RECEIVE YOU UNTO MYSELF; THAT WHERE I AM, THERE YE MAY BE ALSO (John 14:2,3).
For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord that we that are alive, that are left unto the coming of the Lord, shall in no wise precede them that are fallen asleep. For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven, with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first; then we that are alive that are left, shall together with them be caught up in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and SO shall we everBE WITH THE LORD. Wherefore COMFORT one another WITH THESE WORDS (l Thes. 4:15-11 R.V.). Believers get to be with the Lord by His coming for them, not by some other means or at some other time.
What then about the statement in 2 Corinthians 5 :8, "absent from the body and to be present with the Lord"? Does this not teach that believers go to be with the Lord when they die? Only by taking this passage out of its context and reading into it things it does not state can it be made to teach that believers go to be with the Lord at the time of death. The passage does not read, "absent from the body is to be present with the Lord." Neither does it read, "absent from the body, present with the Lord." It reads, "absent from the body and to be present with the Lord." It states nothing about when or how believers get to be with the Lord.
Believers have a living hope but that hope is not death. It is the return of Jesus Christ from Heaven. The context of this passage is plainly dealing with things that will happen when He returns.
For we know that if (not when) our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens (2 Cor. 5:1).
Two houses, the earthly and the heavenly, are introduced in this verse and are in contrast throughout the passage. The dissolving of the earthly house refers to the work of death. However, it should not be hastily concluded that the house not made with hands, is received at the time of death.
Explicit information is given concerning the time and manner of the change from the earthly to the heavenly house in First Corinthians Chapter Fifteen. It is taken for granted that this is known and understood when Second Corinthians Chapter Five is read. Here is what was revealed:
There are also celestial bodies, and bodies terrestrial: but the glory of the celestial is one, and the glory of the terrestrial is another. There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars; for one star differeth from another star in glory. So also is the resurrection of the dead.

It is sown in dishonor.............It is raised in glory
It is sown in weakness...........It is raised in power
It is sown a soulish body........It is raised a spiritual body.
If there is a soulish body,.......there is also a spiritual body....
Behold, I tell you a secret: we shall not all sleep, but we shall ALL BE CHANGED, IN, MOMENT, in the twinkling of an eye, AT THE LAST TRUMP: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put an incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. But WHEN this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, THEN shall come to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. 0 death, where is thy victory? 0 death, where is thy sting? (1 Cor.15:40-44, 51-55 R.V. See entire Chapter). The heavenly house cannot be received at the time of death because all are to be changed in a moment, AT THE LAST TRUMP, when Jesus Christ returns.
Furthermore, the house not made with hands is said to he "eternal in the heavens" (2 Cor. 5 :1). It is not a temporary inswathment for the duration of the death state. If this eternal house is received at the time of death and another is received when the Lord comes, believers would have two. Surely one will be sufficient.
For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven (2 Cor. 5:2). Is it for death that believers groan? Until the Lord returns death is a victorious enemy with a sting. Believers groan for the return of the Lord and deliverance from death. "For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now. And not only they, but ourselves also, who have the first fruit of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, even the redemption of our body" (Rom. 8 :22, 23).
If so be that being clothed we shall not be found naked. For we that are in this tabernacle do groan, being burdened: not for that we would be unclothed, but clothed upon, that mortality might be swallowed up of life (2 Cor. 5:3, 4).
The "naked" or "unclothed" condition refers to the state of the dead, a state unwanted by living believers. Because the "we" and the "clothing" are distinguished, some hold that only the body dies while the real person lives on. This raises the question, what part of man is the real person?
Many reply without hesitation, the spirit or soul, making little or no distinction between the spirit and the soul. The Scriptures most clearly distinguish between the spirit and the soul and teach that the person is made up of body, spirit, and soul (1 Thes. 5 :23; Gen. 2 :7). Death affects the entire person. Its effect on the body is apparent to all. Unfortunately many overlook the teaching of the scriptures concerning its effect upon the soul and spirit.
The Scriptures most definitely teach that at death the soul dies. For example, "The soul that sinneth, it shall die" (Ezk. 18:4, 20); "He spared not their soul from death" (Psa. 78:50); "He hath poured out His soul unto death" (Isa. 53:12). Strange as it may seem the Scriptures never speak of the "immortality of the soul." The Greek word"athanasia", which means immortality occurs only three times in the word of God: twice in 1 Cor. 15:53, 54; and once in 1 Tim. 6:16.
At death the spirit (not the soul) returns to God. (Eccl. 12:7; Luke 23:46). However the spirit is not the consciousness, the ego. The spirit is associated with the breath, and is that force from God which produces life (Gen. 7:22 R.V. Gen. 2:7; Job 27:3; John 6:63). The union of the breath of the spirit of life with the body produces the consciousness. When this union is dissolved by death the consciousness ceases to exist until resurrection (Psa. 146:1-4; Eccl.9:5; Rev.20:5). The further fact that the dead are said to be asleep proves that consciousness is gone. Conversely resurrection is referred to as an awakening of the dead.
The "swallowing up of mortality by life" will occur when the Lord returns. Then the mortal will put on immortality. A mortal person is one in whom the process of death is working. This is true of every living person from the time of birth. The dead are neither mortal nor immortal, they are dead. When Christ returns death will be swallowed up in victory. Immortality is that victory. To be made immortal is to be freed completely from death; not only from the death state, but also from the death process.
"Now he that hath wrought us for the selfsame thing is God, who also hath given unto us the earnest of the Spirit" (2 Cor. 5:5).
The Holy Spirit indwelling each true believer is the earnest of that fulness of life Jesus Christ will impart to them when He returns.
"Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, while we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord: For we walk by faith, not by sight" (2 Cor.5:6, 7).
While at home in the earthly body believers are absent from the Lord. It is a striking fact that the Scriptures represent the person as being where the body is during the death state. Pointed examples are as follows: "The hour is coming, in which all who are in the graves shall hear his voice, and shall come forth" (John 5:28, 29; "Them that sleep in the dust of the earth" (Dan. 12:2).
Believers receive their heavenly bodies BEFORE they get to be with the Lord; the dead by means of resurrection and the living by transfiguration (Phil. 3:20, 21; 1 Cor. 15:51-53 cf. 1 Thes. 4:13-18).
We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord (2 Cor. 5:8).
To make this refer to death is to make the Apostle contradict himself within just a few sentences. In verse four he writes, "not for that we would be unclothed" while in verse eight he is "willing rather to be absent from the body." The Scriptures make it plain that "absent from the body and to be present with the Lord" is a direct reference to what will take place when the Lord returns.
Wherefore we labor, that whether present or absent, we may be well-pleasing to him. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that everyone may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad (2 Cor. 5:9,10).
The earnest endeavor of every spiritual believer is to be well-pleasing to the Lord in everything. This is true not only because of all that He means to them as their Saviour, but also because of the day of reckoning which is coming when each will be requited for the things done in the body whether good or bad.
