Our pastor is taking our church through the book of Luke, and recently he preached on the characteristics of righteousness. I wish to credit him with the outline points* for this posting. I thought they were so good on the practical level that I would share them with you.
First it is important to understand that "righteous" does not mean "sinless." There are several people in Scripture who were definitely sinners and were still considered righteous by God. [Abel (Heb. 11:4), Noah (Gen. 6:9), Abraham (James 2:23), Cornelius (Acts 10:22), David (1 Sam. 24:17)] We can look at this list of men who were used by God in great and mighty ways and see that at times they had some very significant sin issues. This is a testimony to God's grace.
A woman who desires to live a righteous life will obey the commands of Scripture and adhere to what the Lord teaches. This does not mean we become women who perform righteous acts to be seen as righteous. There is to be a desire at the heart level to honor the vows you make, speak truthfully to others, not murder in your heart in anger, not hate others, be content in your circumstances, and abhor idols. These are some of the actions of righteous people. Unless these things come from a desire to honor and glorify God by how you live your life, then there is no spiritual value in doing them. You become like the Pharisee who as he prayed to God thanked God that he was more righteous than the "sinner" next to him (Luke 18:9-14).
People who are righteous very often have difficult and troubled lives. It is a mistake to think that people who have sorrows and hardship are suffering because God is "punishing" them. To do so makes you like Job's 3 friends! Christians are warned that there is trouble and tribulation for us in this world, we should expect suffering because we are supposed to be counter-cultural. Our priorities and our values are to be different from those of our fellow man which is going to cause us problems. We can be trial magnets, which is why we are to keep our focus heavenward and our eyes fixed on Jesus.
Righteous women are praying women. There are some women who have been praying for years for a specific thing, and their prayer has gone unanswered. Such was the case with Hannah (1 Sam. 1) who prayed for a child, and Sari (Gen. 16:1-2) and Elizabeth (Luke 1:5-17) who were also barren. All of these women beseeched the Lord to give them children. They were faithful to continue to pray beyond the time that anyone would consider reasonable. They petitioned the Lord to remove their shame and the cultural disgrace of childlessness.
You may know how the story unfolded for these women; they all became mothers, 2 of them well advanced in years! This brings up the next point, God answers the prayers of the righteous! Even though it may take many months or years, God is faithful to remember our petitions and to answer us. We are to remain faithful in prayer and continue to believe that God will answer.
"O You who hear prayer,To You all men come". Psalm 65:2 (NASB) Part of our problem is that we don't always "like" the answers we get to prayer. Our idea of God being faithful in answering our prayers is to give us what we want. We choose not to look at His goodness in "not" giving us everything we ask for. God is all-knowing (omniscient) and will always do what is best for us and brings Himself glory. He always does that which is honorable and right and will be the most effective at conforming us to the image and likeness of Christ.
Other times, the answers to prayer we get are better than we ever could have imagined! Hannah had that experience when she gave birth to Samuel, and Elizabeth did as well when she gave birth to John the Baptist. Sarai's son Issac became the father of Jacob through whom the 12 Tribes of Israel came leading down through the ages to the birth of our Savior Jesus Christ.
Each of these women who prayed so faithfully had their prayers answered in God's timing, and in God's way.

In early morning, mind and body fold themselves gingerly into the only meditative position they can cope with at this time in life and slide carefully into a breathing meditation. The physical position taken is precarious, ache inducing and anything but balanced, the mind equally precarious and seemingly intractable, ever inclined to wander, over the hills and far away.
When sitting, I sometimes think wistfully of the long limbed creature in her vibrant forties who scrambled easily up steep hillsides, down treacherous gorges and across soggy beaver dams in search of something, she knew not what. That younger woman was always searching for something, the sunlight falling across a wild orchid in the bog, the wind whistling through a crevice, the sound of a stream beyond the hill, a moment of radiant stillness at the top of a cliff. When younger self was engaged in these undertakings, she was in balance, and she knew it not.
Things are different now, for I am older, more brittle in my bones, less elastic in sinews and more ossified in physique. Perhaps I spilled coffee on the counter in the kitchen this morning at first light or dropped a mug and shattered it on the tile floor. This afternoon, my stiff fingers may be unable to grasp paint brush, camera or inkstone firmly, and my physical metabolism protests vigorously when I try to compel it to do anything at all beyond just sitting like a stone. For the most part, one ignores the creaks and protests of her aging organism and goes merrily on her way, only surrendering when absolutely necessary.
Balance is an elusive entity glimpsed now and then, but she always seems to be disappearing around the next corner in a graceful swirl of silken garments and tinkling bells. Sometimes I think I can hear her laughing at me as she moves away, amused by the longing of this eldering being for clarity, grace, balance and equilibrium. Let her laugh, for I am dancing onward and enjoying the journey all the way. Roots down, branches up, and off we go...
The artless suspension of the trout in its watery medium, the effortless grace of a fallen leaf resting in the patient arms of a sleepy tree in late October, the smooth stones resting easy by the beaver pond and its calm waters - these are the essence of a wild, true and natural balance. Each and every trout, leaf, stone and restless being in the great wide world is already in balance, and there is no need to pile up the stones of one's life into an inukshuk, a trail mark or a cairn. One can grow and bloom wherever she is planted, and I have been planted in some very strange places in the last sixty years or so. As for sitting like a chunk of rock, well, I am all for that - for sitting like a mountain, a boulder, a weathered glacial erratic or a chunk of volcano, and for thinking like one too.
Whenever and wherever I enter the landscape in a spirit of openness and reciprocity, I am at home and in perfect balance, but I am always forgetting that elemental truth. Perhaps in one of these lifetimes, I shall get my act together and be able to remember. In the interim, I often think of Linda Hogan's words (from her exquisite volume of essays Dwellings) as I am pottering along, and there is a large measure of comfort in them.

JH - I don't think we can truly know how the runes were originally used. We can try to guess - and there are clues to be found, both in ancient texts and in the original languages - but my view is that belief in magic, like belief in religion, is a very personal thing. Blind adherence to rules set out a thousand or two thousand years ago is as pointless as trying to pretend that scientific advancement has not changed our perception of the Divine. My attitude is this: if it works for you, then that's the way to do it for you. It may not work for anyone else, but that isn't your problem. To paraphrase "Siddharta", everyone follows his own path. If you're following anyone else - even me - you're going the wrong way.
My interest in runes spans both the ancient and modern beliefs. I included rune-casting in the "modern pagan" sense because, regardless of its usage (or not) in earlier times, it has been assimilated into modern practice to fit changing times and attitudes. This I think is perfectly acceptable; we should not feel constrained to think backward in terms of spirituality, but to build on whatever wisdom we have inherited.

KS - At one point in "Runemarks", Maddy thinks through the various explanations of earthquakes she's been given. One ties them to the writhing of the World Serpent at the root of the World Tree; one connects them to a semi-Christian idea of the struggles of wicked souls in the underworld as they wait for the End of Days. Odin provides a third explanation, telling Maddy about "rivers of fire under the earth and avalanches of hot mud and mountains boiling over like kettles; but this seemed to Maddy to be the least likely explanation of all, and she was inclined to believe that he had exaggerated the tale, as he did so many things." This can be read as fairly accurate representation of the struggle between religious belief and scientific understanding here in the United States, unfortunately! Religion offers simple answers and eternal truths; science asks for complex thought and constant questioning. How would you describe the relationship between religion and science in the United Kingdom today?
JH - I guess we have the same conflicts as in the US. We in the UK tend to inherit the US's social problems somewhere along the line, including some of the more extreme manifestations of religious mania. We have not yet gone so far as to teach creationism in our schools, but it's only a matter of time. Already a number of Catholic schools have refused to allow their female pupils to take a vaccine that protects them against cervical cancer on the grounds that it would "encourage immorality." The heart sinks at such stupidity. But...

I don't believe the role of religion should be to offer "simple answers." Like Goethe's Faust"- as opposed to Marlowe's "Doctor Faustus"- I think that the human condition is to strive, and that as soon as we stop striving (to explore, to understand, to create, to live in harmony with each other), then we have lost our way. In ancient times, our perception of the divine was limited by our limited knowledge of the world around us. At that time, it was perfectly acceptable to believe in such things as a flat earth or a physical Hell, to see perfectly natural phenomena as part of a supernatural universe.
The God of the Old Testament (and elsewhere) is a very primitive depiction of the divine - as represented by some very primitive people living in a primitive time, who see him as a kind of vengeful warlord with a mentality as barbaric as their own. The God of the New Testament is very different. Two thousand years later, even aspects of the New Testament (the Immaculate Conception, etc.) are being disputed by the church, and many parts of the Old Testament (e.g., stoning your son for drunkenness, not wearing mixed fibers, human sacrifice, etc.) have been dismissed by most as no longer valid in a modern context.
What I'm saying is that, as our knowledge of the universe has expanded, so should our appreciation of the divine. I don't see science and religion as mutually exclusive. The world is changing constantly. So must our assumptions.

KS - Your novels contain several clever examples of folk etymology. "AEsir" is linked to "Seer-Folk", which is reminiscent of Snorri Sturluson's idea that the AEsir came from Asia. This is an interesting take on oral transmission and transmutation. You've written that "no-one had written [the Norse myths] down at the time, and the fullest accounts came from Christian chroniclers centuries later, and were at best, incomplete, and at worst, badly distorted." In "Runemarks", Loki says that "there's rather a lot the Oracle didn't foretell, and old tales have a habit of getting twisted." The tagline for "Runelight" is "Never trust an Oracle," and there's a suggestion that "V"olusp'a" simply contains the untrustworthy words of a prophetess, not a statement of fact or religious dogma. I really like your idea that the myths may not tell the whole truth, which ties in with the debate (among both scholars and heathens) about the trustworthiness of the surviving mythology as an actual record of pre-Christian belief. Many of your characters were worshiped as living gods in the ancient North (and in modern pagan revivals), and we know that at least "some" actual religious belief is recorded in the myths. How do you personally see the relationship of religion, myth and literature? How does it affect you as an author to know that some readers literally worship the characters your write about?

JH - I don't see the gods of" Runemarks" as my characters or my property, and I hope I've left enough leeway in my fiction for my 'Asatr'u readers to understand that I am not in any way trying to make fun of the gods they worship. What I'm trying to do in my way is to demonstrate how stories evolve and how heroes - be they religious figures, historical figures or both - cast long shadows in their wake. These shadows become part of the oral and written tradition and, as centuries pass, are embellished, rewritten and re-interpreted by successive generations. Thus a hero can become a god or a god dwindle into legend. I hope I haven't offended anyone who truly believes; that was never my intention.
KS - Your portrayal of the Order - the new religion that basically takes over after Ragnar"ok - is pretty grim. You write that the Order's "temples were built on the ruins of springs and barrows and standing stones that once were sacred to an older faith" and that its members kill animals born with runemarks, take babies born with runemarks away from their parents, empty pagan barrows and reconsecrate them, and hang and burn pagans as people "who were in fact the servants of the enemy, and therefore had no souls to save." You have written that you don't hate Christians or "the Catholic Church, organized religion or any other kind of religious group. What I do hate is intolerance, repression, moral superiority, the concepts of original sin, holy war and eternal damnation, plus the various acts that certain individuals are willing to perpetrate in the name of their religion, certain that God is on their side." Without ever mentioning Christianity in your novels, it's pretty clear that the Order is a mythologized version of the Church, since so many of your examples parallel the actual (and often violent) history of northern conversion. There are a vast number of ways to turn Norse mythology into modern fiction (cf. J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings", M.D. Lachlan's "Wolfsangel", Stan Lee and Jack Kirby's "Thor", etc.), but you chose to focus on the (literarily transformed) clash between paganism and Christianity. Why did you choose this particular aspect?

JH - Because it is the closest thing to what really happened to our indigenous beliefs. In Pendle, not far from where I live, there are still gibbets where witches were hanged. In Europe, the early Christian church was responsible for centuries of gruesome persecution - as well as the destruction of many precious ancient texts - in the attempt to stamp out all previous beliefs. There's a reason they're called the Dark Ages. And to think that certain people are trying to take us back there...
However, I still dispute that the Order is a mythologized version of Christianity. For a start, no mention of Christ, or any Christ-figure is ever made. In parenthesis, can I say that I do believe in the historical figure of Jesus, though not in his divinity? To me, he is a marvelous example of a truly wise man whose excellent advice - to be good to each other - has been shanghaied throughout history by people who have twisted his words to fit their twisted agenda. Christianity is not the only patriarchal religion in the world, and - as far as I'm concerned - they are all equally to blame for the spread of intolerance, hypocrisy, religious hatred and holy war.

JH - Absolutely. And remember, traditional Muslim dress is not so different to the way in which women in Europe traditionally dressed,or the way modern nuns still veil their heads and shoulders. Remember too that - during the first part of the Middle Ages - a woman wearing men's clothing was punishable by death; the charge was, officially, heresy. It's one of the reasons they burnt Joan of Arc, who also casts a long shadow. Throughout history, there have been religious taboos over male and female clothing; the Koran and the Sunnah are filled with rules about what men and women can and can't wear. I have simply transferred some of this to my story.

1) IVY LEAGUE COALITION FOR LIFE CONFERENCE ATTACKED
You might've heard from someone or read this in the NY Times; we
recently hosted the Ivy League Coalition for Life conference here at Cornell, and had quite a bit of trouble from a hundred or so
pro-abortion protestors. They stormed into our conference, interrupted it, prevented speakers from speaking, blocked people from entering, destroyed the microphone, spat on people. A couple of police officers were injured too. The mob was a mixture of radical groups like WHAM, Act-Up, and were mostly from out of town. Some of them even drove in from Michigan! A couple of police officers were injured during the
scuffle. Anyway, apart from a slight delay, and change in speaker
order, the conference went on as planned. Boy, it was an exciting day!

2) DOCTOR ASSISTED SUICIDE FAILS IN CALIFORNIA
The California suicide proposition did not pass. ~46% said yes, ~54%
said no. My general feeling is that it did not pass based on moral
objection, but because it was a poorly written law that was open to abuse, etc..
California will also have two pro-choice senators, Barbara Boxer and Diane Feinstein. California also passed a term-limit initiative,
which in effect limits Senators and House to two terms each.

3) PROPOSITION 110 FAILS IN ARIZONA
Proposition 110 in Arizona failed 69% to 31%, and despite all the
hollering by pro-"choicers" that they won it, I believe there were a sizable percentage of pro-lifers who just couldn't swallow the
rape/incest exception. I know of at least two pro-lifers who simply left that part of their ballot blank, and I know of others whom I'm pretty sure voted "no" outright for that very reason.
Proposition 110 gave the pro-"choicers" exactly what they've been
telling us for years they wanted, a rape and incest exception. But
given that the pro-"choice" propaganda machine lies even to its own constituents, it is no surprise now in hindsight that they misled the pro-life community about what they would have been willing to accept.
The pro-life community delivered what they were led to believe was an acceptable compromise, when the pro-"choice" community was in reality unwilling to bend at all. In the end, we were faced with a
proposition which really nobody wanted, even many pro-lifers, and so it failed.
I do think it was a wonderful success in that Arizona was the first state in the union to have the guts to muster such public support and put such a thing on the ballot. The precedent has been set, and I can see it coming to ballot in other states from our example, and I can see it coming to ballot again in Arizona. I can foresee that if we
give up trying to please everybody and thus please nobody, if we aim to please ourselves, we will have much greater success. By that I
mean, next time, we'll put a measure on the ballot that does NOT have the rape/incest exception, we'll broadcast political ads of bloody
abortions, instead of the well dressed "reasonable spokeswoman" we had this time in commercials that insulted everybody by calling both sides
"extremist", and lo and behold, the race will be MUCH closer, and we may even win it.

4) PRO-ABORT INCUMBENT LOSES IN SC

The Religious Right and traditional Upstate Republicans combined to upset incumbent Democratic [and pro-abortion] U.S. Rep. Liz Patterson on Tuesday, political experts say.
Republican Bob Inglis, a 32-year-old Greenville attorney, overcame
long odds to defeat Patterson, a three-term incumbent from the 4th
District and daughter of the late Olin D. Johnson, a longtime
political power in the state. He was a two-time governor and served in the U. S. Senate from 1945-65. "Credit has to be given to mobilization of the Religious Right and the tradition of voting Republican up
here," Aiesi said.
On Sunday before the election, the Christian Coalition, the political arem of religious broadcaster Pat Robertson, distributed more than
200,000 voter guides to 600 churches in the four-county district. The flier spelled out the positions of Patterson and Inglis on such
hot-button issues as abortion, taxes, school prayers, and condom
distribution in the schools. Roberta Combs, state director of the
coalition, said, "We just tried to educate the Christians on the
issues." Patterson favors abortion rights.
The incumbent blamed her defeat on the coalition, accusing it of using the church as a political forum to organize against her. Inglis ran what political observers called a masterpiece of a campaign. He had a huge cadre of volunteers who engaged in old-fashioned politics:
door-to-door campaigning. "He was meticulously well organized," said Charles Dunn, a Clemson University political science professor and GOP activist.
Patterson won her home county of Spartanburg County by about 9,000
votes. But Inglis rolled up a 20,000-vote margin in vote-rich
Greenville and won by almost 6,000 votes out of about 200,000 cast.
Inglis ran a low-key, low-profile campaign. He meticulously
identified the key precincts and went door-to-door in the last two
weeks. "When you walk up on someone's porch and knock on their door, you're entering their world. You're giving them a chance to really
interact," Inglis said. Operating on a shoestring budget, Inglis
placed signs all over the district urging voters to reclaim Congress.
He successfully tied Patterson, a popular incumbent, to the
institution.
Patterson was elected in 1986 after Campbell, who represented the
district for eight years, moved to the State House.

it is referring to Carroll Campbell becoming SC Governor, which is
what he is now, and a very popular and influential one.

5) BACK-ALLEY ASSISTED SUICIDE HITS NATIONAL NEWS
In New York City a school teacher who has multiple sclerosis and is going through a divorce, decided that she didn't want to live. She
allegedly paid a 17 year old student to shoot her. The 17 year old
student did shoot her, but she survived the shot.

At the end of Larry Larmore's article on Carl's Jr., he said that we should not expect to see a chain in Mosocw or on the East Coast.
Perhaps not, but I did see a Carl's Jr. store in Beijing China! Dairy Queen, also rumored for its pro-life leanings, has a store in Beijing as well. How two stores known here for being owned by people who are anti-abortion got over to China, the country with the strictest
population control policy in the world, I'll never know.
Speaking of China's population control policy, I read in a book by
J.M. & S.H. Potter called "China's Peasants" that China's abortion
rate is comparable to that in the United States. The authors
mentioned this in order to lower the readers' "pre-conception" that abortion in out of control in China. What I got out of it is that our
"freedom to choose" country has the same abortion rate as a "condemned to choose" country - this is nothing to feel good about. It does not lower my fears about China's abortion problem; rather, it heightens my fears about OUR abortion problem.

I am afraid that I must disagree strongly with Greg Waldinger (sp?)
and others comments that I am a "dupe" because I consider myself
pro-life and yet planned to vote for Clinton. I believe that this
attitude is a classic example of missing the woods for the trees.
Yes, I will readily concede that Clinton's pro-abortion stance is
repugnant to me. However, Bush has done little more than pay lip
service to the broader issues of the pro-life movement. When the two candidates are weighed in the balance on all the issues (using
Cardinal Bernadin's "seamless garment" analogy) I believe that Clinton comes out ahead. Bush's concern for the unborn seems to end at birth;
his administration's lack of concern for poor women and children has contributed to an environment in which women can be wrongly convinced that abortion is "the only option". Clinton, however, despite his
tolerance for abortion, supports social structures and programs which mediate against this. Now perhaps the two will cancel each other
out--pro-child plus pro-abortion equals contradiction and nothing
more--but I think any changes which really do give women a "choice"
(instead of just the false choice of an abortion) are ultimately for the better.

['Rush's argument is interesting, but also note that animals will
never have the ability to enter into an agreement (or even the
potential). Also, when used to defend abortion, the 'agreement'
clause essentially becomes the definition of a person - if you can
enter an agreement, then you are a person and have rights (such as the
right to life). Otherwise someone else can decide if you warrant any
protection (such as Animal-rights activists, or Pro-life activists).

The other day I received a membership renewal for University Faculty for Life. It occurred to me that since a lot of people on the net are connected with colleges and universities I would announce it so other interested people could join. Then it occurred to me that a lot of
the people connected with universities and colleges are students, not faculty, so I might as well include the address for student group(s).
