Under the illusive cloak of magic, the curiosity of alchemists introduced a means for experimentation into the innate properties of materials. The transformation of raw matter into precious metals, the combination of hot sulphur and wet cold mercury to birth the philosophers stone; to bring the inanimate to life, to miraculously vanish and conjure the body as well as providing a basis for the laws of substance based on sensory interaction and its potentiality. The scientific practices of today echo this inherent desire for material transformation, yet Western tradition remains cautious of unreasoned sensorial data, treating it with illusory trepidation. While this paradigm has proven an efficient methodology, it has installed a discriminatory partition between that which can be rationalised or mathematized and that which is 'only' sensory. These energised and sensate transformations mark the beginning of a new challenge against tradition, returning to curiosity, experimentation and the intensity of the senses away from conventional modes of thought."
The Centre for Fine Art Research (CFAR) and the Research Centre for Creative Making (S.T.U.F.F.) based at the Birmingham Institute of Art and Design (BIAD), have joined forces to welcome papers/performances/exhibition installations that respond to magical and alchemical practices, in all their forms; including but not limited to the origins of alchemy and its contemporary relevance in science, magical performance, illusion, automata, the sensory in artificial intelligence and radical thinking in relation to concepts of time. We invite artists, scientists and philosophers to explore "again" the threshold between these paradigms, dwelling on curiosity and the tradition of scientific questing. By re-visiting the alchemist's vision, we are looking for a renegotiation of the very boundary that separates the shifting representational referents in the traditional image of magic; seeking a way to extend the concept of transformation of the same (metamorphosis), rather than re-defining a realm that is allegedly beyond rationality and linguistic articulation.

And a good thing, too, since the addition of former Internal Void members Kelly Carmichael (guitar) and Adam Heinzmann (bass), as well as veteran doom drummer Mike Smail (ex-Cathedral, Penance and Dream Death) serves to re-energize Liebling, and therefore his legendary underground band's tired sound of late. However, one thing that Show 'em How does not change -- in fact it exacerbates it -- is Liebling's habit of combining re-recorded material from Pentagram's "lost decade" (the 1970s, when they were as prolific as they were poorly documented) with brand new compositions. In fact, the balance of these ten tracks stands at an unprecedentedly lopsided seven to three! But, since those early tunes remain largely unavailable in their original form (some never having exceeded demo-stage to begin with), there's plenty of just cause for resurrecting them here. Especially given the remarkable combination of proto-metallic doom and psychedelic acid rock that drove Pentagram (and Blue Cheer, and Sir Lord Baltimore, and...) at the time when mighty classics like "Wheel of Fortune, Starlady, Catwalk," and the beautifully regretful "Last Days Here" were first written. As for the trio of "newbies" (all of which are co-penned by Carmichael), their modest attributes can't help but pale in comparison to the glories of old, which may actually explain their short supply. In any event, regardless of this ongoing old vs. new debate, the startling fact is that Show 'em How mostly lives up to its boastful title: younger generations of heavy metal and doom metal fans simply can't get by without their Pentagram.

The Thirteen Curses concentrates on the story of Red, who was one of my favourite characters in the first book The Thirteen Secrets. At the end of The Thirteen Secrets, Red swapped places with Tanya and became trapped in the fairy realm. Red is determined to find out what happened to her brother who was kidnapped by the fairies and sets off on a journey to the fairy court. Whilst confronting the fairy court, Tanya discovers that she will have to carry out a bargain, in order to see the safe return of her brother. He will be returned to her, if she can find all 13 charms from Tanya's bracelet which have been scattered around the human world.
Red returns to Elvesdon Manor and with the help of Tanya and Fabian, they begin the hunt for the charms. They have to think carefully where they would be and soon discover that the charms have taken a nasty turn and are now cursed. Each of the thirteen treasures has become a darker side of itself, and the longer the children take to find them, the worse the consequences are for who ever holds the charm.
I didn't think the story could get any darker from the first book, but it surely does. I can now envisage Michelle Harrison as Enid Blyton's dark side! The Thirteen Charms are cursed with such horrible curses that you can just imagine how evil they would have become if left undiscovered.
I loved that Red was the main character throughout this story. She really kicks butt. She is just so self reliant and full of feistiness, that no one would dare to cross her. Within her story, two rather surprising twists occur, neither of which I saw coming.
I loved the search for the charms and trying to second guess where they might be hidden. My favourite would have to be the one found on Oberon's collar which caused his food bowl to keep refilling, pushing his over eating to an extreme.
Just like the first novel, this book just flows and I found myself quickly absorbed back into the story. I have often found second books not to live up to their predecessors, but I found this one surpassed it. However, that might have a little to do with adoring Red. (Did I mention that before? Tee hee)
I truly love Michelle Harrison's imagination. She has created a world that I am sure I should live in. Her characters are so well written, you keep hoping they might pop up out of the page for a chat.
By the end of the book, I was left wondering what else could happen to Red, Tanya and Fabian, and have found my fingers creeping over towards the next book in the series to curb my impatient alter ego. It is so annoying when you have other books that must be read and you are desperate to finish a series. Watch out The Thirteen Secrets - I have my beady eye on you and I am coming to get you!

Okashi's brother who believes that his duty is to stand as a shield for his rather ungrateful sister. Believes to following the orders even when he personally disagrees with them.
JOEY HANDSOME / YAMI TSUGI CLAN
Joined to Yami Tsugi clan because dubious reasons. Top of that he is male which makes situation even weirder. Tries to get loved by Okashi but so far his attempts have failed due being generally very creepy guy.
OKAMI HYOU / CHI TSUGI CLAN
A foolish person who happens be also from a rich family who has close ties with Chi Tsugi clan. She does almost anything as long she gets paid for it.
KITSUNE / RAI TSUGI CLAN
A rather sarcastic fellow, likes to hang out with Okami Hyou for some strange reason. She doesn't care about her supposed quest to beat her Kung-Fu master in a duel to take over Dojo like traditions say.
MAHOU / YAMI TSUGI CLAN
A mage with slight tendency towards pyromancy. However overall she is rather stable and modest person who does not brag about her power that much however she suffers from various phobias at times like fear of ghosts.
BUTSU / RAI TSUGI CLAN
She is supposed to be an archeologist but is really bad at it. Has thieving tendencies even though her main hobbies include reading and throwing books at enemies.
GENERAL BASTARDO / VAMPIRE CLAN
He is Deaux Excimus' brother and has great plans to assume more powerful position and might even try to convince members of the other clans to aid him. Has a long standing grudge with Deaux Excimus about who is better to lead their branch of the clan.
DEAUX EXCIMUS / VAMPIRE CLAN
Often takes someone as her nemesis because of wrong reasons which she deludes itself to be right ones. Most of her minions don't get a second chance if they fail and thus her "trusted" Vampires often hide their failures from her. Should someone admit their mistakes she sees as a weakness and then she uses Dark Edge on them. On that note, it is her favorite sword too.
