Polytheism And Olympian Spirits

The Olympians

The original 'Olympian Spirits' [pre-dating the Olympian Spirits of Renaissance grimoires like the Arbatel of Magick and the Magia Verum, The Grimoire of Turiel] were from ancient Greece. They were the twelve gods of Olympia, who lived atop Mt. Olympus in the legends of Greek myth.

The story begins with Cronus [and his wife Rhea] Together they created the 12 Olympian gods. Cronus had come to power when he castrated his father, Uranus. For punishment he was commanded to eat his children as they were born. Rhea, who feared loosing her children, came to the rescue by tricking Cronus into swallowing a rock - instead of his child Zeus. Zeus escaped this certain fate and grew up to revolt against Cronus and the Titans by defeating them and banishing them to the underworld, known as Tartarus

So here we have the traditional Olympian Spirits all of which originated from the Father God, Chronus [Saturn]

* Zeus -The Father God, and the god of the Sky, the Rain and the thunder [Jupiter]

* Poseidon - God of the Seas, the oceans and the Brother of Zeus. Second only in command [Neptune]

* Hades - Ruler of the underworld and the Dead. Brother to Zeus and Poseidon. As an underworld god he is the guardian of the treasures of the earth [Pluto]

* Hestia - The goddess of the hearth and the home [Vesta]

* Hera - The wife of Zeus, and the goddess of marriage. Also much trouble for Zeus even though she is his companion [Juno]

* Ares - The god of war and military, and the son of Zeus and Hera. [Mars]

* Athena - Goddess of honor and battle, daughter of Zeus [Minerva]

* Apollo - The god of the Sun; bringer of enlightenment and doom. God of the lyre and of the deadly silver arrows which he shoots from afar. [Sun]

* Aphrodite - Goddess of love and passion, wife of Hephaestus, but who charmed the likes of gods such as Hermes and Ares [Venus]

* Hermes - Messenger of the gods, and the god of thieves and commerce. [Mercury]

* Artemis - Daughter of Zeus and sister of Apollo. Goddess of chastity and childbirth, often associated with Hecate [Diana, Moon]

* Hephaestus - The son of Zeus and Hera, known as the ugly and lame god who was cast from the cliffs of Mt. Olympus. He is the god of the forge and of metal working. Also known as Vulcan [Traditional ruler of Virgo]
