Red is determined to find out what happened to her brother who was kidnapped by the fairies and sets off on a journey to the fairy court. Whilst confronting the fairy court, Tanya discovers that she will have to carry out a bargain, in order to see the safe return of her brother. He will be returned to her, if she can find all 13 charms from Tanya's bracelet which have been scattered around the human world.
Red returns to Elvesdon Manor and with the help of Tanya and Fabian, they begin the hunt for the charms. They have to think carefully where they would be and soon discover that the charms have taken a nasty turn and are now cursed. Each of the thirteen treasures has become a darker side of itself, and the longer the children take to find them, the worse the consequences are for who ever holds the charm.
I didn't think the story could get any darker from the first book, but it surely does. I can now envisage Michelle Harrison as Enid Blyton's dark side! The Thirteen Charms are cursed with such horrible curses that you can just imagine how evil they would have become if left undiscovered.
I loved that Red was the main character throughout this story. She really kicks butt. She is just so self reliant and full of feistiness, that no one would dare to cross her. Within her story, two rather surprising twists occur, neither of which I saw coming.
I loved the search for the charms and trying to second guess where they might be hidden. My favourite would have to be the one found on Oberon's collar which caused his food bowl to keep refilling, pushing his over eating to an extreme.
Just like the first novel, this book just flows and I found myself quickly absorbed back into the story. I have often found second books not to live up to their predecessors, but I found this one surpassed it. However, that might have a little to do with adoring Red. (Did I mention that before? Tee hee)
I truly love Michelle Harrison's imagination. She has created a world that I am sure I should live in. Her characters are so well written, you keep hoping they might pop up out of the page for a chat.
By the end of the book, I was left wondering what else could happen to Red, Tanya and Fabian, and have found my fingers creeping over towards the next book in the series to curb my impatient alter ego. It is so annoying when you have other books that must be read and you are desperate to finish a series. Watch out The Thirteen Secrets - I have my beady eye on you and I am coming to get you!

I guess part of the reason for my bad study habits is the simple fact that I believe that being able to get some sleep is more important than cramming more facts into my head.
Awhile back, I ran across someone blogging about how they were cramming for a Grade exam in one of the branches of the Golden Dawn. And honestly, I could not imagine being allowed to cram for an advancement exam.
Ok, for the record, I have never belonged to a branch that places a whole lot of emphasis on the material of the Knowledge Lectures. Why? Did I mention that I am a bad student? And yes, if you are a bad student with a distinct lack of willpower to memorize every comma in the Knowledge Lectures, there is a Order for you. If I can find them, so can you.
After all, not all of us are Harvard material...or Yale...or whatever is the punchline. See, I can't even learn a joke properly. Which is why I am community college material.
Don't ask me how I got into the University of Colorado at Denver. I still haven't figured that one out. Nor can I explain how I convinced my current advanced Adept advisor to help me. Maybe, my personality is a lot more pleasant than I think it is.
I am wary of cramming for any exam. But especially Golden Dawn exams. Hasn't research proven that information crammed leaks out of your brain as soon as the exam book is closed? I think I might want to know a few facts in case I wander off into the astral and met something that I don't like.
And my sponsor never gave me a chance to cram. Exams were spur of the moment affairs. It was felt that you either could pass the test on a two-second notice or you didn't pass. I would like to think that ritual skill is more important than being able to score 90% or more on the Knowledge Lectures. But what do I know I gone to a community college, both academically and symbolically. I am a bad student and correspondence schools have always bored me. At least, I am aware of this I know many people who do not have a clue that they are bad students. Yay for me and my slim supply of self-knowledge.

I am well aware that I keep undertaking projects and then they fizzle. I have been presented another. A local person wants to write a book on the magickal properties of the local plant life. She is armed with some Native American meanings. I am ignorant of such things nearly completely.
The plan is for me to skry said plants and see what I see. If it matches the Native meanings, cool. If not, I will try to use them for what I see in them. From there, we decide if we should proceed or not.

Snowbrush recently wrote a thought-provoking post that is worth a read. He makes many points worth highlighting, but I'll limit myself to mentioning two of them here:
* Some atheists are not the "happy atheist" types who celebrate life without gods.
* Based on the behavior of many atheists, there is little reason to think that the rise of atheism will necessarily solve many of the problems we like to attribute to religion.
I found his first point quite interesting, but I'm still trying to figure out what to say about it. I have trouble relating to the desire to believe in gods or the pervasive sense of loss related to atheism. At the same time, I have never fit the "happy atheist" image either. When I moved from Christianity to atheism, I did experience a great sense of relief, newfound freedom, and better mental health. For at least a few years, I did feel much happier as an atheist than I had as a Christian.
It is nearly impossible to know whether I'd be any more or less happy today if I was still a Christian. Had I stuck with Christianity, I'd be a very different person in many ways. My best guess is that I am probably no more or less happy today than most Christians.
I thought Conservative Skeptic made a great point about this in his post, Happy Atheist? Just Human: with the sole exception of god belief, we are just like religious believers. They are not happy all the time, and neither are we. It sometimes irks me that some atheists seem determined to convey an image of perpetual happiness because I cannot relate to that at all. It strikes me as dishonest. Nobody is happy all the time, are they?
Here is how Snowbrush describes this second point:
Too many atheists are haters, and this means that their ascendancy to political power might not mark an end to religious intolerance but simply a reversal of whom is dishing it out. For example, if militant atheists ran the country, I've no doubt but what religion would be classified as a mental illness, religious people would be discriminated against socially and in the workforce, and the children of religious people might conceivably be taken from their homes. No matter which end of the spectrum they occupy, the reign of fanatics is always the same.Unfortunately, I think he's right. We have seen too much irrational behavior, tribalism, and petty infighting on the part of atheists to imagine that many of the same problems would not persist if atheism were to replace religious belief. Just because we are right on the question of gods doesn't mean we are more rational in other areas, and it certainly doesn't mean we are any kinder, more thoughtful, or better able to resist the pull of the darker aspects of our nature. Being atheists does not make us any less human.
I cannot help thinking of that infamous South Park episode from 2006 where the Unified Atheist League and the United Atheist Alliance were at war. Sometimes it seems eerily prophetic.
