I really wanted to talk about this today. I guess I'll give you another chance to peruse it for yourselves. ANOTHER QUESTION FROM A PROTESTANT. TOMORROW IS ASH-WEDNESDAY, IN OUR PROTESTANT TRADITION THE RECEIVING OF THE ASH CROSS ON THE FOREHEAD IS NOT A CUSTOM. BUT I WOULD VERY MUCH LIKE TO RECEIVE IT AS A SIGN OF ENTERING LENT, A TIME OF CONCENTRATION ON GOD. WOULD IT BE ALLRIGHT FOR ME TO RECEIVE THE ASHCROSS IN THE CATHOLIC CHURCH. ( OF COURSE WITHOUT TAKING PART IN THE EUCHARIST.)
I don't see a problem with this, although, if you're that interested in the way the Catholic Church does things.....you might want to think about.....doing things that way all the time? You realize that, in a sense, you will be posing as a Catholic all day tomorrow?
In Quebec, there's a big shrine to the famous mother-daughter dream team, Sts. Anne and Mary, and they have tiny chunks of both of them on display.
(Mary's looks like a finger bone, but the piece of St. Anne is literally a "chunk" - just a little square of indescernable body part!) The last time I went there I was in the 7th or 8th grade, and I was amazed that the church could keep track of something so tiny for thousands of years, while I was "lose" my homework assignments somewhere between the bus stop and home.

This is upsetting. I can't imagine why a Catholic Church would claim to have the
relics of St. Anne and Mary. To begin with, St. Anne...we don't even know her name, really. We don't know one single thing about her. What has been passed down about her mostly comes from Gospels that were tossed out of the New Testament and for good reason, like the Killer Baby Jesus stories. We know Mary had a mother. That is all we know. Well, maybe not all....we know she was a good mother, because look how well she did with Mary. Then, on the other hand, Mary, being free from sin, technically could have had Britney Spears as a mother and still turned out fine. Sacred Tradition venerates Ann as the saintly mother of Mary. Works for me! The idea that anyone has a 'chunk' of her is utterly absurd.
But MARY RELICS! WHAT!? It is the Dogma of the Catholic Church (which means this is something the Church says is "absolutely true", unlike, say, whether or not dogs go to heaven) that Mary was assumed bodily into heaven. Her whole body went to heaven and I imagine the dress she was wearing at the time. Unless she had a hair cut right before she left, there ARE NO RELICS.
No "first class relics", at any rate, unless she had had a recent manicure or a haircut. There are three types of relics:
1. FIRST CLASS RELICS: an actual piece of the person.
2. SECOND CLASS RELICS: an object the person touched or used, like her hairbrush or her shoes or her handbag.
3.THIRD CLASS RELICS: an object touched to a first class relic. For example, you touch your hankie to the bone of a saint. The hankie is now a third class relic.
Explaining that will make answering this question a snap!
Where did you hear that people are not supposed to possess relics? I ask because I have a second class relic of Blessed Cardinal Alojzije Stepinac that my friend received during a trip to Europe.

I'll bet you actually have a third class relic there. I really didn't make this up, I promise.
Regular people used to possess first class relics. Now the Church doesn't want that to happen anymore. For one thing, it's a really big fat sin (simony) to sell relics, which is what was going on, even though it was often disguised as a 'donation'. It didn't pass the smell test, a lot of the time, so the Church just put an end to it.
The Vicarate of Rome is in charge of the relics. If a Cathlic Church needs a relic, for the altar maybe, the priest would write a request to the Vicarate in Rome to obtain a first class relic. You "might" be able to obtain one for yourself, but you'd better have a pretty compelling reason.
I'm not sure quite where the Church stands on possessing second class relics. My guess would be that if you've come by it naturally, like you were Mother Teresa's Super Cuts barber and you kept the comb you used on her, no problem. But once you try to sell it on ebay=problem. I don't think the Church would be much more happy about peole buying and selling and collecting second class relics than She is about first class relics.
But third class relics are NO PROBLEM. You can have oodles of them. I would encourage it! Not the oodles part. I don't know why you'd what oodles, really. That sounds like a collection.
I don't have a problem with having a collection of third class relics, per se. It's just that once you start collecting, where's the veneration? Collecting something tends to be about the pursuit of objects. The saints are not Beanie Babies.

You can name your child "Blotsnefad", if you like. There is no "law" that says you have to give your child a Christian name, let alone a saint's name. It is simply a practice that is encouraged for a couple or reasons: (I love making little lists!)

A few days ago I got an email with this request from a link manager, Prachi Goel:

I am not interested at all thanks.I wasn't expecting to hear any more about it, but Prachi replied and here is how the email conversation went:

ME: I do not promote businesses that sell spells.

ME: Non-profit making pagan organisations, preferably in England, or very small pagan supplies retailers with physical shops in London, England.
PRACHI: I respect your policy that you can accept only London base non profit organization website. Your traffic will be increase. I can not force to you but it will be mutually beneficial for both of us. ME: Prachi, No, I do not promote businesses that sell spells. I write a non-profit-making blog which is aimed at giving high quality information to pagans in London, I do not sell goods or services, so there is little benefit to me from increasing traffic to my site in the way you suggest. I do not approve of selling spells. The spells I list on my blog are all free.I really thought that would be it, but I then got another reply from Prachi, who said: "I am sending to you one nice article which one helpful for increasing your site ranking."
Well, I really had to give Prachi 10 out of 10 for effort, and I will be quoting his article further on so you can read what it said, but first I thought I would blog about my thoughts on online services selling love spells. The first and main reason that I am rather opposed to such spell-selling businesses is that a long time ago a friend of mine spent her savings paying for spell-casting services after her boyfriend walked out on her. She didn't get her errant lover back. Personally, I thought she had wasted her money.
Of course I am not saying that no one ever gets their lover back, I just think there are better ways of going about it - such as perhaps chatting to a relationship counsellor. If you are going to use magic to help the situation, I am a firm believer that you should cast spells for yourself rather than pay someone you have never even met to perform a service you have no proof they have actually put much effort into.
Another factor is that many Wiccans consider it unethical to cast a love spell to try to control the actions of another person without their permission. They see that type of coercion as being just as wrong as using physical force to have your way with someone. However, I feel doing a spell to try to get the opportunity for romance with a person you fancy - or to rekindle a passion - is OK, so long as you add a line that says something like, "If it be their will too," or simply, "An it harm none."
I do have a lot of sympathy for anyone whose lover has dumped them. It is absolutely heartbreaking - and it has happened to me in the past. One evening, quite out of the blue, my live-in partner of 10 years came home from work and announced he was leaving me because he had fallen in love with someone else. That was it, the relationship was over. I was devastated.
Of course, initially, I wanted him to return to me and say he was sorry. Yes, I did magic - but not magic to get my old boyfriend back. The spell I cast asked for happiness in love before the end of the year - and I got it. Within a month, I was in a blissful and passionate romance with someone new. That new someone became my husband a few years later and we have now been married for 10 very happy years.
My real advice to anyone in that situation is to cast a spell with similar wording to mine - just ask for happiness in love, not for a specific person. Think about it carefully. What do you really want? Do you just want your old lover back regardless, even if the relationship will be miserable and full of rows, resentment and suspicions? Or would you rather be happy? Your call, of course.

Over the weekend, "The Daily Caller"'s Editor-in-Chief and Fox News Contributor TUCKER CARLSON unloaded on the Wiccan community. Is Carlson not afraid of the spells they could cast on him?
"I don't spend a lot of time on Twitter, so I'm not sure of the dimensions of it, but I'm pretty sure that I'm unpopular in the witchcraft community, and I understand why," Carlson told FishbowlDC this afternoon. "I probably was unduly harsh. As far as I know, most Wiccans are peaceful taxpayers. I've never been mugged by one anyway. So I apologize for hurting anyone's feelings."
On Sunday's Fox & Friends, the crew was discussing the University of Missouri's "Holiday and Recommended Accommodations" guide that lists eight Wiccan holidays. "The bad side of Wiccanism is it's obviously a form ofwitchcraft," Carlson said. "But the upside is you get a ton of holidays. Twenty percent of all school holidays, as described by the University of Missouri, are Wiccan holidays. Twenty percent of all."
He later added that "any religion whose most sacred day is Halloween, I just can't take seriously. I mean, call me a bigot. And I'm not, you know, not offering an editorial against Wiccanism."
Carlson said Wiccan was either a "compulsive Dungeons & Dragons player or is a middle-aged, twice-divorced older woman living in a rural area who works as a midwife."
Needless to say, a portion of the resident peanut gallery on Twitter wasn't pleased. They called him a "douche" and an "asshole" and an "asshat." They said they thought his bow-tie was tied too tight. Many suggested that the pagans turn him into a bow-tied newt. And the worst? Someone calling herself AUNTIE MEME says he has been looking "a little toadlike" lately.
Uh oh.
