That's the title of an excellent post by Orthocath, an ex-Eastern Catholic (now Eastern Orthodox) blogger. His point is that Protestants frequently claim things like Catholic Eucharistic theology are Medieval inventions... completely ignoring that the Eastern Orthodox hold virtually identical views, despite the Great Schism of 1054. And to those Protestants who would suggest that the Great Apostasy simply had happened by 1054, Orthocath raises the stakes by bringing up the Coptic Church in Egypt, which has been in schism from the Church since 451 A.D. Yet look at how similar their liturgy looks:
The Coptic Church demonstrates that a liturgical and sacramental theology permeated the Christian Church 600 years before the East-West Schism. At the very least, we can say that at the time of the Council of Chalcedon (451 AD), a Protestant theological approach is light years away. Did it exist before then? Were there Christians in the Early Church who looked like the Evangelicals of today? If so, they left no mark in either the Ancient Churches nor in the writings of the Church Fathers in East or West.Well said.

Pope St. Victor I
In October, I wrote about a fascinating conflict in the first-century church of Corinth. When a dispute broke out within their church, they wrote to Rome. Pope Clement wrote back, issued some orders, and resolved the dispute. Under any circumstances, this would be interesting, because it shows the way that papal authority worked in the primitive Church. But this is all the more telling in that all of this happened while the Apostle John was still alive."
Today, I want to share an epilogue, of sorts, to that story. About a century after Clement intervened in Corinth, we find the papacy once again involved in Asia Minor. The pope was St. Victor, who reigned from 189-99. The controversy was primarily a liturgical one. The various parts of the early Church had different liturgical calendars for Easter, and different Lenten periods of fasting prior to Easter.
At the heart of the dispute was this: in Asia Minor, in those churches dating back to the Apostle John, Easter was celebrated on the 14th of Nisan, the date of the Jewish Passover. Most of the Church rejected this Passover Easter practice, since it meant Easter was frequently on a weekday. They always celebrated Easter on the Lord's Day, Sunday, even if it meant it didn't sync up with the Jewish calendar.
Several popes tolerated these contrary liturgical practices, since each practice traced back to at least one Apostle. Pope Victor took a different course, deciding to unify the entire Church's Easter calendar. He ordered the Asian churches to abandon their old practice in favor of the Easter Sunday dating. They refused. The Church historian Eusebius records their response, written by a bishop named Polycrates. Their basis for refusal is that this was the unbroken practice of the Apostle John, St. Polycarp, and others.
The letter has a few interesting characteristics. First, it refers to the Apostle "John, who was both a witness and a teacher, who reclined upon the bosom of the Lord, and, BEING A PRIEST, WORE THE SACERDOTAL PLATE." If these second-century bishops are to be believed, this means that the Apostle John wore the golden plate of a high priest (Exodus 28:36-38). This gives us a clear indication of the fact the early Church understood their clergy in a sacerdotal way: that is, we have priests, not just pastors.

Second, the letter answers Pope Victor's demands by quoting Acts 5:29, "We ought to obey God rather than man." But that's St. Peter's response to the "high priest". It's not the sort of thing you say to someone beneath you. So even in arguing that Victor has exceeded his authority over them, the Asian bishops aren't really refuting that he has authority there. As Campion says, Pope Victor isn't treated like a foreign power or an outside meddler.
Third, both sides in the dispute are appealing to Tradition, to chains of unbroken practice from the Apostles down to the present (and since John seems to have instituted a different practice than the other Apostles, both sides of the dispute seem to be "right"). We have what could be a beautiful story about coexisting liturgical traditions, the embrace of different customs, and the diversity of the Body of Christ. Only that's not how this story turns out. Instead, it was an ugly clash of obedience and authority on the one hand, with liturgical tradition on the other.
That's because Pope Victor responded to the Asian bishops' disobedience with a mass excommunication of those who refuse to switch to Easter Sunday. Other bishops -- even ones who agreed with Victor -- were, quite reasonably, shocked at the harshness of this punishment. St. Irenaeus (who held to an Easter Sunday date, and a believer in the Roman papacy) was one of the bishops who intervened to ensure that cooler heads prevailed. He pointed out that Pope Anacletus had communed with St. Polycarp, despite their difference on this matter.
It's not entirely clear (at least to me, and to the sources that I've read) what happened to the excommunication after Irenaeus and the other bishops spoke up. Eusebius concludes his account by saying simply:
THUS IRENaeUS, WHO TRULY WAS WELL NAMED [IRENAEUS' NAME COMES FROM THE GREEK WORD FOR PEACE], BECAME A PEACEMAKER IN THIS MATTER, EXHORTING AND NEGOTIATING IN THIS WAY IN BEHALF OF THE PEACE OF THE CHURCHES. AND HE CONFERRED BY LETTER ABOUT THIS MOOTED QUESTION, not only with Victor, but also with most of the other rulers of the churchesThis leaves open the question of "why" the question was moot. Was it because Victor recanted the excommunications? Or because the excommunications were there to stay? My hunch is the former, simply because we don't hear of the excommunications later on, but that's all it is: a hunch.
In any case, the ultimate outcome of the conflict is striking: Victor won. Asia Minor switched from Passover Easter (a tradition established by the Apostle John!) to Easter Sunday, at the demand of the pope. Within a relatively short period of time, those still holding on to the 14th of Nisan dating have been reduced to an insignificant pocket, and as far as I know, they have since gone extinct.
Now, in a way, this story might affirm Protestant fears about the papacy, given the harshness of Victor's response, and the Apostolic origins of the Asian liturgical calendar. But it's worth remembering that this story isn't from some imperious Renaissance Pope. It's from one of the early Christian martyr popes, and the whole thing happened before the end of the second century. Literally, it'll be over a century before we even arrive at the Edict of Milan's legalization of Christianity, much less anything like the Council of Nicaea. Christians of a certain stripe long for the early days of Christianity, imagining highly-centralized structures like the papacy to be a later development (or invention). But this "is "early Christianity. The papacy has been at the heart of the Catholic Church from the start, as history shows us with both Pope Clement and Pope Victor.

I really loved what you have to say in this post for a couple reasons,
1. Because as I have mentioned before I feel strongly that the Amazon's
were real, that the Textual evidence for their existence is found in the

herself and nature"; this speaks very much to the vision of the Women of

This too was very encouraging for me, when I was a young man in college
in late 70's it was really at a high point of the Feminist Revolution,
woman were asserting themselves as professors, and assistant professors;
which was a much newer thing than I could have imagined, having always
had woman teachers in grammar and high school, it did not occur to me
how new this was to University; but years later reading Pat Irelands
Biography I came to find out she was the first woman admitted to her law
school; in the early 70's
Anyhow,
It seems to me Women have been in retreat for some time; (and I know I
disagree with Gaia here on this) but just the same, as Pagans women have
retreated from the revolutionary positions of my Youth; be the subject
the Burning, the Matriarchy, Even Magick; there has been a retreat; and
thinking about that retreat, I sense it is part of a more general
retreat.
I think if one had tried to explain, "Flirty Girl Fitness" or Girls Gone
Wild Video's to Gloria Steinhem or Adrea Dworkin in the early 70's their
heads might have exploded; not that they are made, that's as old as the
hills, but how a great many woman have embraced them, are absolutely

chauvinist pigs that explores it in some depth.
And dont get me wrong,
As a Man I certainly dont want to fly back to the 1950's; but I think we

off topic, because I do think ones Paganism is intimately tied to ones
intimate life, no?
In the Arena of Politics, Choice is under serious attack; and I know
some members will likely be staunchly pro-life in any group this size;
but I have to admit after very long reflection (10 years at least) I had
to come to the conclusion; without reproductive rights, a woman cannot
truly aspire to equal rights; she will always be subjected to the threat
that her life, her plans, her dreams will be trumped by the demands of
an unwanted pregnancy; and while one can argue... "well she can always
lead a life of abstinence." No, we are very sexual creatures we humans,
it is not natural for any adult to live the life of a monk; and it has
not worked out well for the Catholic Clergy to try to impose that
unnatural lifestyle on its members.
That Idea is just another misconception of the Patriarchy, that we can
all be reasonable, rational little Apollo's; Celebrating the Glory of
the Sun 24/7 and ignoring the moon; But the Moon will have her Say, and
for those who deny her; that say can encompass some considerable wrath;
just ask Elliot Spitzer. Things did not go so well for him, when the
dark side of his moon, was pushed into the light of day.
Anyhow I found your very positive proFeminist statement most welcome.

Kali. But still there are many diffrences.

like Kali, Hecate, Artemis, Cerridwyn, Morrigan, Lilith, Pele, Baba

Crone "Dark" is not necessarily evil. LIke Sarisvati, Kwan Yin, Losna,
Lakshmi, Sita would not be of the Dark Goddesses. I love Kwan Yin even
though she is not "Dark". See the Dark Goddesses are loving but they

do they forgive time and time again they have no problem taking the
spiritual two by four and whacking one on the head. They are
independent, deal with war, deal with the dead, the destructive side of
nature, hard lessons, they are shocking, do what they want, and yet they
are also loving and beutiful, merciful, terrifying as well as beautiful
to behold. I see as time goes on and as women are finding equality not
only in
the job industry, but amoung their peers, home, and socially and the
more
that ancient ways are being more revealed or revived the Goddess
especially goddesses like Kali, Hecate, Durga, Pele, Sekhmet are
becomming more and more famous, loved and worshipped again. Even of the
rituals to many of these wonderful goddesses have been forgotten they
are being invented.

Michael Glickman: Crop Circles, the Greatest Mystery
Two weeks ago, Andrew Collins told us that all crop formations are made
by skilled and secretive human artists. This week, Michael Glickman says
that the opposite is true: that virtually none of them are hoaxes.
In this interview with Whitley Strieber, Michael shares his years of
research with us, explaining how there are really two crop circle
phenomena, one that celebrates the astonishing and inexplicable
formations, and another, darker phenomenon that has a very different
agenda.
He and Whitley also talk about the two formations, the Chilbolton
"Aricibo Reply" formation and the Crabwood "Disk" formation that are
completely different in the way they communicate from all the others.
But why are they so different, and what was the Crabwood formation
really intended to say with its famous message, "Beware the bearers of
false gifts and their broken promises. Much pain but still time. We
oppose deception."
Who was this message intended to reach? Why was it sent in this strange
way? Michael has some remarkable answers

If find it a little unfortunate that I did not post a link to Andrew
Collin's interview, because I believe Andrew is a much more serious
researcher; and as his colleague Collin Andrews (Crop Circles signs of
Contact) demonstrated a few years ago using low light camera's and such;
up to 90% of present day circles are man made; vandalism or artwork they
are man made, and I personally find this Tragically short sighted;
Dr Levengood's work demonstrates that there are (or at least have been)
truly anomalous circles, and as such they represent at least the
possibility of genuine communications from an absolutely non-human
intelligence(s); and those potential messages are being drowned out in a
swamp of man made circles; so even science could be persuaded to look at
the phenom; the message is all but unrecoverable in a sea of immature
hands shouting, "Look here, See ME!"
I wanna throw up.
Still the season is nearly upon us, and there will almost certainly be
some anomalous formations and one can hope against hope we find some why
to sift the wheat from all that chaff. Blessings, BB.

The all encompassing Goddess with myths of love and compassion in all her phases are now replaced with ones proclaiming the Dark Goddess as something to be feared, and male warrior Gods are eating their children, and procreate their doomed children through trickery and rape. It is these macho male patriarchal Pagan traditions that sought to turn Goddesses and Moon Godesses into hunters and war Goddesses. The men valued only the male Gods traits and violent ways, thus they forced "male" ways upon Goddesses. {Which is not the way of Goddesses!} Goddesses are protectress of all creatures and life and Nature. Protectors do not kill those they love and protect. To be called a Goddess of Animals and then kill those beloved animals is a creation of male insanity! After male patriarchal Pagans snuffed out the ancient powerfully magickal and nurturing Matriarchal Goddess Witches traditions and their practices, the men turned the healing, nurturing, enchanting, powerfully magickal Moon Goddesses into hunters and war mongers; sometimes dressing the Moon Goddesses as a violent human male soldier with armor and shield and carrying material weapons of war. When the Goddess protects any being or She must Stop something, She does not use material male war armor and weapons. Saying New Moon instead of Dark Moon is a patriarchal doing. The Dark phase of the Moon {not to be confused with the dark side of the Moon} occurs each month during the three days preceding the actual Dark of the Moon or the 3 nights of the Dark Moon ~ the exact night of the Dark Moon and the night right before and after the Dark Moon, when Dark Moon rituals and magicks are performed. The Dark Moon is wrongly considered the New Moon, for the Dark Moon is not New. Three nights after the Dark Moon is the real New Moon when the Moon is actually a New waxing Crescent Moon that can be seen. Over the centuries, as people no longer worshiped the Moon as Goddess, nor used the Moon as the calendar, they began to fear the dark and everything associated with the dark, including the name itself. Unfortunately, because they feared the dark, is it no wonder that they feared the Dark Goddess, whom they do not understand. So, instead of the Moon being called the Dark Moon, it became the absurdly titled New Moon. But, today's Witches are claiming the rightful Dark Moon name, and the Goddesses independence, strength and freedom of standing joyfully without a male God.For all WeMoon {women}, the Lunar cycle is linked to women. The Dark Moon phase is linked to women when they are shedding their blood. When the lunar cycle is overlaid on the menstrual cycle, the Full Moon corresponds to ovulation and fertility, and the Dark Moon is analogous to the actual shedding of the blood. The ancient Goddess-worshiping cultures of yesteryear understood that when they bled, it is woman's most powerful time of the month; a time when her psychic and spiritual energies are most highly sensitized. At this time of a woman's cycle, she tends to want to withdraw and go within, to look upon her deepest Spirit self, but in this masculine world of today, women are prevented in doing that. The Crone Witch who no longer sheds blood is her most powerful all the time. If it is considered a powerful time for women during the Dark Moon menstrual cycles, then it should also be considered a powerful time of the month when the Moon is in Her dark phase. But, just as with the rise of the violent male god cultures of Zeus and Horus and in which women's menstrual cycle became taboo, so has working magick when the Moon is in Her dark phase become taboo. The cycles of the Moon and women feeling Goddess Moon energies are a women's gift.Often in the modern Craft, and most particularly in your mainstream traditions such as modern "Wicca", it is said that you should never do magick when the Moon is in its dark phase of three nights. They say it is a time of rest; a time to retreat behind closed doors, as the Dark Goddess roams the land with Her destructive powers. They say that Her powers are too strong and that we should not visit with the Crone, and if we do, that we should not tarry too long for fear that we could not handle the Crone's harsh energies. Such ignorance!Even in the Craft today, we have confusing and sometimes negative associations with the concept of the Dark Mother and of the energies that She carries. They say that Witches not long in the Craft should leave working with Her dark powers to the adept, to the ones who have been with the Craft for many years and whom can handle Her harsh energies. These same feeble ignorant controlling, often male Witches, are unfortunately putting fear of the powerful Dark Mother in the minds of others.In most pagan books you do not even see many rituals for the Crone or the Dark of the Moon or for the Full Moon. It is not the Sun who helps effect the tides during Full or Dark Moon for only the Moon powers effects the tides of the ocean and the tides of WeMoon {woman} and All Life. She stands alone and She stands strong. The Crone teaches us survival. She has survived all things and from Her we may learn that we, too, will survive all things. But first, we must seek Her to learn of Her teachings. Many do not truly understand the Dark Mother because to understand Her, you must walk with Her. WeMoon {women} are daughters of the Goddess, and we carry Her gifts naturally. We know Her no matter what Her phases is, as She is Maiden and Mother and Crone to us all.
