Sheikh Yusuf Qaradawi, president of the International Union of Muslim Scholars, visited Gaza on May 7-10 at head of an entourage of 45, including senior officials of the organization. Qaradawi's visit was extensively covered in the Hamas government's media, which again highlighted the "sheikh of "jihad"'s" (as Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh called him) backing for this Palestinian movement. On May 10, the headline of the official Hamas daily "Falastin "was worded in that spirit: "Qaradawi calls for liberating the soil of Palestine." The subhead was a quotation of the most important statement he made: "We will never concede Palestine and we will never recognize Israel." During the visit, Qaradawi set forth his political outlook, thereby offering a sort of vision for the future (as well as a sort of last will and testament, given his advanced age (86) and his own recent remark that his days are numbered). The following are the main tenets of that outlook:QARADAWI'S VISION FOR THE FUTURE * The Palestinians have a right to the soil of Palestine: "We join hands with the Palestinians and support the most just cause on the face of the earth, since the Palestinians were driven by the Jews from their homes by force of arms." Qaradawi denies any Jewish connection to the Land of Israel, regarding the Jews who have settled in it as foreigners who forcefully seized land that did not belong to them. "We are here, and here we will remain, we will not leave our land and starting from today there will be no emigration. We will die on our land or we will triumph." * The Palestinians have no right to concede Palestine. Qaradawi asserted that the Palestinians hold the deed to Palestine, but also emphasized that not one of them has the right or the authorization to give up his right and receive financial compensation in lieu of the soil of the homeland. "Islam and Sharia do not allow selling part of the homeland, and this, our homeland, belongs to us, and so it will remain and we will return to it." Qaradawi further stated: "We will never concede the right [to Palestine] and we will never recognize 'Israel.'" * Qaradawi thereby assigns to the Palestinians the religious responsibility for liberating Palestine in the name of the Islamic "ummah" ("The people of Palestine and Gaza represent the entire Arab and Islamic "ummah"). He severely forbids them to take positions that entail recognition of any foreign rule, Jewish or other, over the soil of Palestine. One implication is the denial of any possibility of political compromise or recognition of Israel's right to exist. * Unity is the key to the liberation of Palestine. Qaradawi spoke of the huge importance he ascribes to unity as a force multiplier that can enable the Muslims to overcome, as he sees it, even those with nuclear and chemical weapons. Unity must prevail in the internal Palestinian sphere and in the Arab-Islamic arena as well, thereby preparing the ground for an Islamic conquest of the entire State of Israel. "We want to see a united "ummah" that will forcefully assert its rights to the land, and at the forefront of those rights - Palestine." * "Jihad" is fundamental to the liberation of Palestine. The only strategy to liberate it, Qaradawi asserted, is "jihad" in the way of Allah." This requires rejecting political dialogue and compromise while adhering to armed struggle in the spirit of Islam. He praised the residents of Palestine and Gaza for raising the flag of "jihad" and refusing to lower it despite the difficulties they have encountered. "I am proud to be a Gazan, since Gaza maintains its role in the "jihad", in the struggle, and in the defense of the Al-Aqsa Mosque," he stated. * The ultimate goal is an Islamic state. Qaradawi called on Muslims to fulfill divine justice, establish a Muslim society, and subsequently a Muslim "ummah". Regaining rights in Palestine is, in his view, an aspect of striving to regain the Muslim lands of the early Islamic era, in keeping with the mission of the Prophet Muhammad and those who came after him. Dr. Marwan Abu Ras, president of the Palestinian Islamic Scholars Association, which is identified with Hamas, said in a speech honoring Qaradawi at the Islamic University that the Palestinians see themselves as continuing his path. "We are students of Qaradawi. We learned from him the true path ["Wasatiyyah" - the middle road], and [the way of] force regarding [the restoration of] rights, and [the way of] power regarding the prohibition on visiting Al-Aqsa [Mosque] when it is under occupation and [conditional] on its permission. We learned from him the [importance] of force in supporting the Palestinian resistance and in the actions of self-sacrifice [suicide]." During the Second Intifada, Qaradawi published a religious ruling ("fatwa") that permits suicide bombings and the killing of Israeli civilians. He headed the Union of Good organization, which raised millions of dollars for institutions connected to Hamas. A considerable part of these funds went to support Palestinian terrorists imprisoned in Israel, for the families of terrorists who were killed including those who had carried out suicide bombings, and for Hamas' "dawah" activity, which inculcates the values of "jihad" in Palestinian society. The visit of Qaradawi, the premier religious scholar of the Sunni Muslim world, is of great significance for Hamas, which wins further, major legitimacy for its rule. The visit also indicates that Hamas' "jihad" approach is preferable to that of political negotiations, which the "president of Palestine," Mahmoud Abbas, represents. About a decade ago, Qaradawi issued a "fatwa" on the gradual conquest of the entire continent of Europe via Islamic exhortation ("dawah") and the demographic factor, leading to the fulfillment of Muhammad's prophecy on the conquest of the cities of Constantinople (Istanbul), Jerusalem, and Romiyyah (Rome) as a condition for the emergence of the Mahdi, the Muslim messiah. "Put God first."
The first time I ever heard this phrase, it came from my Grandmother's lips. In her way, she was trying to instill in me the same wisdom passed down from generation to generation. The idea that having god as your number one priority would cure all of your ills and grant you everlasting life in Heaven. Mind you, she meant well. I am sure someone in her young life said those words to her, meaning no harm but trying to save her soul. But, now that I am older and away from the trap, I no longer think this phrase to be true -- or even correct.
It is the idea that a supposed all-powerful, all-knowing, all-loving, all-[insert your description here] would need so much (or anything) that makes it hard to believe. Basically, I fail to see what something that is supposed to be perfect and complete could gain from people praying to or worshiping it. By definition, being perfect implies there is no fault or defect or lack. Yet, Christians state that God "wants" you, "needs" you to love Him, even though He is fully complete and perfect already.
In all of the twisting and contorting, everyone forgets one thing: You can't have it both ways. Either God is perfect and requires nothing from us, or he is faulty and needs our love and adoration. God is not supposed to be like a flawed human, yet love, pride, jealousy, wrath, kindness, caring, hatred, and rage are all attached to Him -- all traits a human possesses. This is always explained away though. "God is outside of everything, and logic does not apply", they say. Well, unfortunately, this is not an answer. It is just mental gymnastics at it's best, trying to answer something that is impossible.
Another thing I have come to hate about the phrase is the implication that family and even children are to take a back seat to a deity. Again, why does a god need more from me than a child would? A child is helpless up to a certain age. They cannot survive without a parent's love and care. On the other hand, something that can answer prayers, punish the wicked with awesome displays of power, and created everything in existence, wouldn't need to care about whether or not I paid my lip service for the evening or read a few lines in a book. Yet, the mantra stands: "Put God First," and people believe it.
In my opinion, this idea is meant to keep you fastened to the cult. If everything is focused on the main character of the story, how can you entertain any other view? Kids, spouses, other family members, work, hobbies, and other things become second class to a deity. Who, if given the chance, would take pleasure in watching you suffer forever and ever. But forget about that, He loves you. Eye on the prize, baby, eye on the prize.
Christians can cut this any way they want. Main thing is, however, it's just another ridiculous example of cult mentality. When you take all of your energy and being, and put it into something that requires your full compliance, you are asking for trouble. It is dangerous to lose who you truly are in anything. But, it is even more dangerous to buy into a way of thinking that would put you in the place of choosing something you can't see over the people you love.

However Greek, like many other languages, has no "sh" sound. Instead, the closest approximation, the Greek sigma, was used when transcribing "Yeshua" as "Iesus". Translators of English versions of the New Testament transliterated the Greek transcription of a Hebrew name, instead of returning to the original Hebrew. This was doubly unfortunate, first because the "sh" sound exists in English, and second because in English the "s" sound can shift to the "z" sound, which is what happened in the case of the pronunciation of "Jesus". The fourth sound one hears in the name Yeshua is the "u" sound, as in the word "true". Like the first three sounds, this also has come to be mispronounced but in this case it is not the fault of the translators. They transcribed this sound accurately, but English is not a phonetic language and "u" can be pronounced in more than one way. At some point the "u" in "Jesus" came to be pronounced as in "cut," and so we say "Jee-zuhs." The "a" sound, as in the word "father," is the fifth sound in Jesus' name. It is followed by a guttural produced by contracting the lower throat muscles and retracting the tongue root- an unfamiliar task for English speakers. In an exception to the rule, the vowel sound "a" associated with the last letter "ayin" (the guttural) is pronounced before it, not after. While there is no equivalent in English or any other Indo-European language, it is somewhat similar to the last sound in the name of the composer, "Bach." In this position it is almost inaudible to the western ear. Some Israelis pronounce this last sound and some don't, depending on what part of the dispersion their families returned from. The Hebrew Language Academy, guardian of the purity of the language, has ruled that it should be sounded, and Israeli radio and television announcers are required to pronounce it correctly. There was no letter to represent them, and so these fifth and sixth sounds were dropped from the Greek transcription of "Yeshua," -the transcription from which the English "Jesus" is derived. So where did the final "s" of "Jesus" come from? Masculine names in Greek ordinarily end with a consonant, usually with an "s" sound, and less frequently with an "n" or "r" sound. In the case of "Iesus," the Greeks added a sigma, the "s" sound, to close the word. The same is true for the names Nicodemus, Judas, Lazarus, and others. English speakers make one final change from the original pronunciation of Jesus' name. English places the accent on "Je," rather than on "sus." For this reason, the "u" has been shortened in its English pronunciation to "uh." In Jesus' Name Today's tradition of pronouncing His completely hellenized name as "Jesus" has indeed obscured His true name, "Yeshua," and has shifted its perceived meaning much like most of His original teachings.
