BARRIE - Noor-ul-Islam mosque and community centre will be one of the first to invest in the microFIT green energy program.
The centre will kick off its green energy project Sept. 1 at 6:45 p.m.
Azward Sulaiman of the centre said, "We as a community centre (invested) money into this for solar panels."
The microFIT program was launched in 2009 as a part of Ontario's Green Energy Act (GEA).
"The act promotes property owners to go green," Sulaiman said.
The program provides home and business owners with the opportunity to develop small or "micro" renewable electricity generation projects on their property.
Noor-ul-Islam will install solar panels, using a renewable resource that is free, environmentally friendly and readily available.
The community centre is funded by the public and run by volunteers, and aims to bring together Muslims living in Simcoe county, while providing an understanding of the culture to non-Muslims.
"We offer counseling and teaching facilities for all different cultures," Sulaiman said.
The two-floor building has been open since 2004. The top floor features a prayer hall, while the bottom houses rooms for various Islamic activities.
"We hope to see local politicians and representatives at the kickoff event," Sulaiman said.
The centre is at 155 Ferris Lane.
